Nunsense' sequel
on stage at Centre
The Kitchener-Waterloo
Symphony will open its 1995/96
Pops Series with three perform-
ances by Canadian superstar,
Michael Burgess.
Born in Regina and raised in
Toronto, Michael Burgess first
sang in his school choir before
deciding on a performing career,
although he admits being tempted
by teaching, law and the
priesthood.
Throughout Canada and the
United States, Michael Burgess has
established his reputation as one of
the leading men of the musical
theatre stage, and his many roles
include performances in H.M.S.
Pinafore at the Stratford Festival,
where he was an acclaimed Captain
Corcoran.
It was in 1989, however, that
Michael Burgess came to national
prominence in the all-Canadian
production of Les Miserables in the
Cameron Mackintosh/Ed and
David Mirvish production at the
Royal Alexandra Theatre in
Toronto.
He sang the lead role of Jean
Valjean in more than 1,000
performances of the hit musical.
During the run of Les Miz, he
hosted and narrated the television
documentary "With Glowing
Hearts," seen coast-to-coast in
Canada.
He also appeared with figure
skating champion, Kurt Browning,
The Centre In The Square has
just announced that tickets will be
come available at the box office
this Saturday, Sept. 9 for two
shows: Andre-Philippe Gagnon and
Marty Stuart.
"We already have a performance
for Andre-Philippe Gagnon,on sale,
for Oct. 16, but we are virtually
sold-out so have added a second
show, Oct. 17 at 8 p.m. It is the
tickets for the second show that are
on sale beginning Saturday," said
Dan Donaldson, The Centre's
general manager.
Also on sale Saturday are tickets
for the Marty Party - Marty Stuart
and the Rock and Roil Cowboys.
Marty's special guest .at this
performance is Jason McCoy.
in the CBC special "Stars on Ice,"
singing the beautiful Bring Him
Home.
From Les Miz, Michael Burgess
went on to star in another hit
musical, Man of La Mancha,
playing Don Quixote in the Robin
Phillips/Mirvish production, where
his performances of the knight of
legend earned him rave reviews.
A frequent guest performer on
television, Mr. Burgess' roles have
included appearances on Street
Legal, Bordertown, and ENG.
His own special, Michael
Burgess at Massey Hall, won a
Gemini Award and was one of the
most highly-rated television shows
of its season.
For his performances with the
Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony,
Michael Burgess will perform
many of his favourite songs.
Conducted by Doug Riley, the
orchestra will accompany Mr.
Burgess in music from West Side
Story, the films of Walt Disney,
and Anyone Can Whistle.
He will naturally include many of
the songs that he has made his own,
including Bring Him Home from
Les Miserables, The Impossible
Dream from Man of La Mancha,
and selections from the hit musicals
of the past decade: Phantom of the
Opera, Miss Saigon, Beauty and
the Beast, Chess, and Aspects of
Love.

appearances with the Kitchener-

Nunsense 11, the sequel to the
phenomenally successful off-
Broadway hit that ran for nine
years, comes to Kitchener's The
Centre In The Square for two
performances on Tuesday and
Wednesday, Sept. 26 and 27. Both
performances are at 8 p.m.
This musical-comedy hit begins
where Nunsense left off, further
revealing the trials and tribulations
of the Little Sisters of Hoboken,
five wacky nuns whose peppy
songs, double entendres, and
wicked puns elicit two-plus hours
of infectious laughter from the
audience.
In contrast to the response to
most sequels, Nunsense II has
enjoyed an enthusiastic reception,
playing long runs in many cities
including six years in Boston and
two years in Minneapolis, plus an
A & E television special starring
Rue McClanahan.
In this sequel, the sisters have
returned from their fundraising
efforts (in the original Nunsense) to
present a "thank you" show, where
a talent scout is rumoured to be in
attendance. Though the Reverend
Mother and her right-hand woman,
Sister Mary Hubert, like to believe
they have no time for dreams of
stardom, they often join the antics
and ambitions of Sister Mary Leo,
Sister Robert Anne, and Sister
Mary Amnesia.
Written by Dan Goggins, the
show takes a whimsical look at the
human side of nuns. It is a delight
to discover that nuns can be as
much fun as those who are less
"heavenly". Audience participation
is a big part of the show, and
Goggins involves the audience
from the very start of the show to
the delight of every theatre-goer.
Tickets are available for
Nunsense II by calling The Centre
