By John Schedler Ever since Pulp Fiction ***1I2 (Alliance) first made its big screen appearance people have either been wildly enthusiastic about the film's merits or appalled by its excesses. I guess my opinion falls somewhere in between. As with his previous Reservoir Dogs, director and co-writer Quentin Tarantino spins another fascinating and brutal tale of contract killers, coke-heads and other L.A. low-lifes. This is also an actor's showcase with outstanding performances from John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman and Bruce Willis to name only a few. For me the film's major drawbacks are the unnecessarily extreme profanity with which we are consistently assaulted and the awful pan and scan video transfer. Your best viewing option is the widescreen laserdisc version or going out to see it in a theatre. (Rated R with all sorts of warnings for the faint hearted). Also worth a look is Shallow Grave **** (Alliance), a suspenseful and dark humoured thriller from Scotland. The plot involves three close-knit and rather snobbish friends who are confronted with a dead roommate, suitcase full of money and the moral dilemma of reporting the body to the police or keeping the cash and burying the body. Shallow Grave is an excellent film all round. Highly recommended! (Rated R) I am one of those people who is fascinated by documentaries both as a producer/editor and a viewer. In The Land of the Deaf **** (Kino/CHV) turns out to be one of the best as it captures the lyricism of visual language. This eloquent and touching film from France follows a class of deaf school children, a man who teaches sign language to adults and many others who live rich full lives. (Unrated) Among the new and unpreviewed releases is Major Payne (MCA/Universal), a comedy about a gung-ho Marine (Damon Wayans) assigned to whip a group of undisciplined kids into shape. (Rated PG-13) Although I find Jim Canvey extremely hard to take, many others don't and they may be quite happy to check out Rubberface (Malofilm), a comedy about a stand up comic that looks suspiciously like an old TV pilot. (Rated PG) Fans of the Monkees will be thrilled with the release of the group's complete televigion output. The Monkees (Rhino/SMA) is a limited edition boxed set which includes 20 cassettes containing all 58 TV episodes plus a bonus tape of the show's original pilot with music performed by Boyce & Hart, a 40-page book and a Monkees watch and it can all be yours for only $549.99. Gulp! A little more in my price range at $14.95 each is The Kings of Comedy (HGV), a three part series that explores the explosive career of the popular 1950s comedy team Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. video .X.
