THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1995. PAGE 23. New pastor happy to serve rural parishes By Bonnie Gropp It was not a lifelong mission, nor a calling, that brought Cathrine Campbell to the ministry. The Brampton native refers to the choice of her newest profession as an on-going process. Ordained on Aug. 17, Cathrine preached her first sermon on Sept. 1 at Melville Presbyterian, Brussels and Knox Presbyterian, Belgrave. She was inducted on Sept. 10. Cathrine had enjoyed a variety of careers, from assistant registrar at a number of universities and colleges to working for an MPP, before joining the Presbyterian ministry. She decided to go back to school at Knox College when she was in her 40s, to get her Masters. Origi- nally Cathrine planned on being a librarian, but she became involved with the national church and has, she says, "the unusual distinction of being chair of the board and a stu- dent." Becoming a minister was "an evolutionary thing," she says. Cathrine also served as a school board trustee for the Peel Board of Education, which she says, provid- ed her with some "good chal- lenges." Beginning Oct. 1 there will be a 21.6 per cent cut in payments to welfare recipients in Huron but people will be allowed to earn more money from working before their payments are cut. In a report to the the Huron County Social and Cultural Ser- vices Committee, John MacKin- non, social services administrator, said the cuts made by the provincial government will mean a single per- son who is employable will receive $520 per month instead of the cur- rent $663, a drop of $143. Howev- er, if the person had a part-time job that paid $200 a month, he or she would now lose only $60 of their support instead of $112.50 so the net loss would be $100.50. A couple on welfare will see their support drop $249 but if they earn $1,000 a month they'll be able to keep an extra $75, meaning a net Pastors are found for Presbyteri- an parishes through the call system Following ordination, a profile is sent to a congregation which then invites that pastor to preach for a call. If the congregation feels there is compatibility they issue a call to the pastor, who in turn has the opportunity to accept. For Cathrine, who is single, the call to Brussels was a welcome one. "In my case, I was hoping to stay within range of my family (she has two sisters in Brampton). I'm only two hours away here, so I was very pleased when they approached me." The move was not as much of a culture shock as one might have expected. "Brampton has been home for 30 years, but this is not that much different because I actu- ally lived in the country outside Brampton. As a matter of fact the first week here we (she and her dog Hector) had a bit of an adjustment to make to the noise." Cathrine was also amazed by the busyness of the community. "Peo- ple are people everywhere and from what I've seen thus far, I don't think I'm going to be bored. There drop of $174 a month. The changes are expected to save the province $1 billion a year and could save Huron $41,000 between October and December, and $164,000 next year, based on the same level of cases. MacKinnon's report said, howev- er, that the government's decision to drop the jobsOntario without starting a similar projects will make it harder for people to get off wel- fare. The jobs program had helped many people get a job by subsidiz- ing training. There were 613 welfare cases with 1,244 beneficiaries at the end of June, down 25 eases last year. Huron's rate of 2.07 per cent of the population receiving municipal social assistance is the fifth lowest in Ontario (Kingston is highest at 11.51 per cent). are so many organizations, and though I'm not a compulsive joiner, I have belonged to a number of organizations," she says, such as the library board and hospital board. Her active congregations will keep her on the go as well. Noting that the ministry is never a 9-5 job, Cathrine says she hopes in the next little while to get around to visiting her parish members. "By the time you're finished what you need to do there are not many hours left. But I'm planning to be a fairly active minister." Acknowledging that Melville, with its membership of 200, and Knox with 25 members have some distinctively different needs, such as programming of activities, the basic needs of the parishioners are essentially the same, Cathrine says. "I hope I'm not one of those people who comes in with a grand scheme. I want to know what each one is thinking and learn about the com- munity at large." The congregation and its role in the community is an important aspect of the ministry to Cathrine. "The biggest challenge for the church today is that it not be shy. Research bares out that churches have stood back and not ventured opinions on issues. They have withdrawn from the mainstream. The church used to be part of the community. I think perhaps it's swung too far the other way." "But come back and ask me in AUCTION SALE OF MACHINERY, HOUSEHOLD EFFECTS & MISCELLANEOUS will be held for J. She credited her congregations with being the type of church that has formed a partnership with the community. "They are involved. This church is not just somewhere you go on Sunday to rest or because it's free parking." While pastors often seem to come and go at rural churches, Cathrine says she has no set time in mind for how long she will be min- istering at tlie Melville and Knox parishes. "I am a great believer in the call system, and I hope to stay as long as my call is here." "For the time being I'm just get- ting acquainted with the people and learning my way around the lines and concession. I need a good little map." Welfare payments cut, Oct. 1
