PAGE 20. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1995. From the Minister's Study Returning from vacation was rude awakening By Nancy J. Beale Trinity Anglican, Blyth St. John's Anglican, Brussels Vacations are wonderful. They are a time of rest and relaxation, a time to re-focus and return to work refreshed and renewed. On returning from our vacation a couple of weeks ago, I had a rather rude awakening. An act of vandalism had been committed on the walls of our church - Trinity Anglican in Blyth. My initial reaction to this crime was shock. "Why would anyone do Worshippers at Blyth United Church on Sunday, Sept. 10 were ushered by Shirley and Les Rutledge, Ann Elliott and Lenora Davidson. Michelle McNichol was in charge of the nursery. Greetings and call to worship were given by Rev. Ian Diamond. The opening hymn Now Thank We All our God was followed by prayer and adoration. The prayer of concession was repeated in unison. The choir anthem was I Need Thee Every Hour with a solo by Gayle Poore accompanied by Phyllis Boak, director of music, at the organ. The Psalm was 139 - "0 Lord Thou Hast Searched Me". Hymn This Is the Day, This Is the Day was sung. The theme of the conversation with the children was about getting such a thing? "Look at what they have done to our beautiful little church." As the days go by though, I have been thinking more and more about the 'they' who committed this crime. I've been wondering whether it was one person or a number of people. Were 'they' young, teenagers, or adults? Why are 'they' so angry? This act of vandalism continues to shake me up. It has been an important reminder for me that the place of Christians in our society is not always secure, that we are not acquainted with new friends and because Pastor Diamond is a new friend, he brought a gift from friends in Bowral, Australia to friends here. He asked two of the children to hold a church banner up depicting the three church charges. This gift will be hung in the church. Ann Elliott welcomed the children then explained this is a new endeavour, which is hoped will improve communication. She explained how the children and their teachers would retire to the Sunday School. The New Testament lesson was Philemon 1-21 read by Rev. Diamond. The gospel lesson was Luke 14, 25-33 read by Lorna Fraser. Rev. Diamond's sermon was "Discipleship is costly." Take Up the Cross, the Saviour always welcome. My anger at this act of violence is gone. Like many of my parishioners, I am now merely sad. I am sad that "our vandals" believe that we "suck." I am sad that they believe that "God ignores" them, and I am extremely sad that they have, in their own words, chosen, Satan over Christ, and "love Satan." "Our vandal(s)" have reminded me of how much pain and anger exists in our world — how lonely and frustrated some of our friends, neighbours and acquaintances are. Said was sung fcllowed by the Pastoral Prayer and The Lord's Prayer. 0 Jesus I Have Promised to Serve Thee, was sung. Condolences are offered to the family and friends of Eugene Coburn, and also of Harvey Sillib. Harvey Snell reported on the garage and bake sale sponsored by the stewards. The Christian Education pro- grams begin this week. UCW meeting is Sept. 14 at 2 p.m. Roll call is from II Samuel. Anyone who is homebound and would appreciate Communion coinciding with the next Communion Service on Sept. 24 should contact Rev. Diamond. Coffee break is Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 10 a.m. in the church. Guest speaker is Lorna Shaw (author of In Fullness of Time). As Christians, followers of Jesus, we have our work cut out for us. "Our vandal(s)" have reminded us that we cannot sit complacently in our pews, pretending that every- thing in the world is hunky-dorey. Jesus, the Christ, came preaching love, forgiveness and healing. As followers of Jesus, we are called, we have committed our lives to sharing that love with all people ... not just other Christians, not just the people who we go to church with. We are called to love all people, to spread the light of Christ throughout the whole world. It is my hope that as Christians, we will all respond to the pain- filled cry of "our vandal(s). I hope that we will all be shaken up enough to take our Sunday morning prayers and songs into the streets of our communities. Finally, I would like to ask all of our readers to pray for "our vandal(s)" and all people who are in spiritual pain and crisis — that they may be healed ... and come to know God's love. Discipleship, sermon theme E. Garland brings message Sunday, Sept. 10 was Children's Sunday at Brussels Mennonite Fellowship. Elwin Garland gave the message. He chose Daniel 10: 7-21 as the scripture text. This passage was read by Andrew Garland. Elwin spoke on the topic of angels. Angels have been here since creation. We have no idea how many angels there are, he said, but they are spirits and can appear in many forms, or be invisible. The will of God will determine how and when they appear. Garland said, there are guardian angels for every church. Many, many people in the past and in the present have been touched by angels. About one third of the angels that God created fell with Lucifer. Discernment is necessary to distinguish between the good and bad angels, he said. Good angels leave people with a sense of peace, and will never go contrary to the word of God. Garland related several 'angel stories' he had read about, and invited people from the congregation to relate experiences they have had with angels. Lucy Hesse was song leader and Phailop Larprom provided accom- paniment on the guitar. Tim Procter played a piano solo for the offer- tory. Andra Dettweiler and Joanna Steinman were ushers, and Jamie Koch and Nathan Garland collected the offering. Following the Sunday School session, a fellowship meal was held in the gymnasium. Games followed the meal, as part of the Children's Sunday celebrations. On Saturday, the Youth Group travelled to Wonderland. , Wednesday evening Youth Bible studies have resumed at the Koch home, following a break for the summer. Several committee meetings are planned for the coming week. 141:\ BLYTH CHRISTIAN REFORMED CHURCH HIGHWAY 4, BLYTH--523-9233 Sunday 10:00 a.m. & 7:30 p.m. Rev. Adrian A.
