THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1995. The Brussels Tigers hold a one game lead in their Huron County Fastball League division final against Monkton. The winner advances to the league final to meet either the Lieury Red Sox or the Zurich Rangers. Friday night in Brussels a seventh inning throwing error allowed Steve Fritz to score the winning run in a 5-4 victory. Todd Uhrig opened the scoring with a first inning homerun for the Tigers wha then increased their lead to a 4-1 after three innings. Monkton replied with three of their own in the fourth setting the stage for seventh inning dramatics. With one out three consecutive walks loaded the bases. A draw in infield threw out the runner at homeplate for two away before a potential inning ending throw from shortstop to first base sailed high for the winning run. Ken Higgins had a solo home run for the Tigers while Ron Strome batted three for three and Brett Clarkson was two for three. For Monkton Jeff Earl cleared the left field fence while hitting two for three while Jeremy Smith and Chris VanBakel reached base on two of three attempts. Doug Conley and Uhrig shared the pitching for Brussels while Jeff Smith went the distance for Monkton. Game two in the series is Thursday night in Monkton at 8 p.m. Ron Strome's two run home run in the sixth inning gave the Brussels Tigers a 4-1 championship win over Hickson in the annual Goderich Fastball Tournament held on the Labour Day weekend. It was the first championship for the Tigers this year, who lost the final game in both the Seaforth and Brussels tournaments. Opening night action saw the Chepstow Thunder score two runs in their last at bat for a 5-4 win. The Tigers had rallied with three runs in their sixth at bat for a 4-3 lead but were unable to hold off the Thunder. Gary Pipe batted three for three with Doug Conley and Dave Smith sharing the pitching duties. Saturday the Tigers mercied the Walton Brewers 15-0. Doug Shaw and Ron Strome reached base on all four attempts while Gary Pipe and Tim Fritz were three for three. Todd Uhrig pitched the win facing three batters over the limit. Semi-final action saw Gary Pipe and Ken Higgins each hit solo homeruns for a 5-3 win over Lakeside. Higgins and Doug Shaw each hit three for three with Dave Smith striking out eight for the win. In the championship game Todd Uhrig, who also cleared the centrefield fence, pitched the win with a four hit performance. Offensively during the tournament the Tigers were led by Doug Shaw, Murray Pipe, who was six for eight and Gary Pipe, who batted eight for 11. As well Tim Fritz, Ron Strome and Todd Uhrig all hit .500 or better. The Tigers were also successful on all four pinch hit appearances. Doug Shaw who was eight for 10 in the tournament had reached base on 15 of his last 16 attempts heading into the championship game. Soccer teams host banquet Brussels Minor Soccer banquet and pot luck supper was held Sept. 10 at Brussels, Morris and Grey auditorium. President Karen Bowles thanked the executive, coaches and referees for their help this past year. Joe and Miriam Terpstra on behalf of Acre T Farms were thanked for their donation of soccer uniforms for the Bantam team. Neil Hemingway thanked Karen Bowles for her excellent work as president for 1995. Brussels had all eight teams introduced by their coaches and presented with trophies. Soccer registration increased from 106 to 121 children this past summer. The tournament marked the end of the women's slowpitch season in Brussels. The Die Hards went on to lose the B to Walton, while the Bombers defeated TFA in the C contest. The Scramblers were nudged in the A by the Bookies, who beat them by one run.
