Huron Pioneer Thresher Reunion 1995 Sawmill comes out of storage for Reunion Old -time sawmill draws crowds One of the favourite exhibits at the Huron Pioneer Thresher Reunion and Hobby Show is the steam-powered sawmill. Boards cut during the event will eventually be used in the construction of furniture and other wood products. For many participants, the Thresher Reunion provides an annual call to dust off old "toys" and pull them out of the closet. For Wilbert Phillipi, of Chepstow, this is no srnall task. Each year, Fillippi and a team of helpers pull a steam-powered sawmill out of storage. They then spend a few days assgmbling and preparing the apparatus for use during the Reunion weekend. "The belts and blades are removed for the safety of children playing in the area throuout the year," Fillippi says. Jim Sloan, a co-organizor of this year's display, gives a good description of the machine: "The mill is run completely by steam engines, 10 in all, which come from Lucknow, Auburn, Moorefield, Mitchell, St. Thomas, London and includes two Sawyer Masseys from Watford. The engines used range in horsepower from 10 to 75. • They have great lugging power and each size is useful for specific woods. The 10 hp. is used for softwoods and the 75 hp. is used for beech logs." According to Mr. Sloan, the mill currently used by the Threshers was donated to them over 20 years ago. It has an all-steel track, a 54-inch blade and an edger for edging the logs. Mr. Phillippi adds, "The logs are sawed to rough lumber and are then used for the construction of furniture.
