Judge fines McKillop man $3,000 A McKillop Twp. man appeared in Wingham's provincial court Aug. 23 to answer to two charges of pos- session of stolen property. Presiding Judge R.G.E. Hunter was told that a van stolen from the St. Jacob's arena parking lot on Dec. 29, 1994 was recovered at McCallum's RR4, Walton property, during the execution of a search warrant. Also found was a GMC A Blyth man was fined $200 in Wingham's provincial court, Aug. 23 on a charge of narcotic posses- sion. Curtis Campbell pled guilty to the charge which was laid July 22 in Wingham. The crown attorney told Judge R.G.E. Hunter that a witness had told police that she had seen a man in a car, whom she believed to be "rolling a joint". The court was told that police found a bag of a green grassy substance. The crown said that upon question- ing Campbell admitted the bag con- tained "weed". When Judge Hunter asked Camp- bell if he agreed with the facts in court, however, Campbell said he did not. His response was affirmative pickup which had been stolen in February from Toronto. The plates had been changed on both vehicles, which were valued at approximately $39,000 and for which McCallum had paid a total of $6,500, as well as having had cosmetic changes made. McCallum had registered the van and truck in his wife's name. Defense counsel, Mr. Murphy, when Hunter then asked him if he did have marijuana in his posses- sion that day. The crown said Campbell's record showed a previous convic- noted that this was the first time the accused had been in trouble. "He did not steal the vehicles, he pur- chased them, though I think it's fair to say he knew the price he was paying was low and suspected they might be stolen which is why he did what he did," Murphy said. He noted that McCallum had made restitution in the amounts of- $12,840 and $14,950 to the respec- lion for narcotic possession in 1989, which Campbell said he believed was from 1987. The accused was given 30 days to pay the fine. Crime Stoppers THEFT OF BICYCLE On Aug. 20 somebody removed a bicycle from a residence at Conc. 17 Grey Twp., RR 3, Walton. The bike was a 91 black, man's Mongoose, Ibok sport mountain bike. The crown attorney had also sug- gested a suspended sentence. Hunter, however, saw things dif- ferently. "Given the value here of $39-40,000 it calls for more than probation," he said. He fined McCallum $1,500 on each charge for a total of $3,000 and placed him on 12 months probation. Man pays $200 for pot possession • GOODS • SERVICES • TRADES Poaching goes against our nature!
