The villagers and farmers at
Doon Heritage Crossroads will
capture the colour, competition and
community spirit of a 1914 Fall
Fair and Antique Power Show on
Sunday, Sept. 17 from 10 a.m. to
4:30 p.m.
Set in the autumn amidst the
blazing colours and cool, crisp air,
fall fairs were an important event to
the rural community. It was the
culmination of a year's worth of
effort - the best of the best was
ready for competition. Livestock,
handiwork, crafts, preserves and
baking were proudly displayed and
judged. The large farm implement
companies would exhibit their
wonderful new farm machinery.
Musical entertainment, the penny
carnival and the livestock displays
made the fair a special event for
everyone in the community.
Call 748-1914 for entry rules for
competitions in baking, produce
and crafts. Doon will be accepting
entries on Saturday, Sept. 16,
between 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. and
Sunday, Sept. 17 between 9 and
10 a.m.
At its monthly meeting, held at
Westover Inn, St. Marys, Thursday,
Aug. 22 the Huron Perth District
Health Council approved a letter to
be sent to the Minister of Health of
Ontario, James Wilson, respecting
long term care for the District.
It is understood that the new
provincial government will not
now be implementing certain
sections of Bill 173., namely, those
which would have severely limited
the involvement of such organiza-
tions as the Victorian Order of
Nurses and the Red Cross as well
as certain labour adjustment
provisions. The letter advises that
Council supports the government's
decision to proceed with reform of
the Long Term Care system which
would lead to improved access,
high quality affordable care, cost
savings to go to front line services,
consistency in eligibility require-
ments and equitable funding of
services.
The letter goes on to say that
during the long term care planning
process conducted to date, Council,
through its Committees in Huron
and Perth, has adhered to the values
and beliefs expressed by the local
communities: a grass roots
approach; a client focused system;
improved access and co-ordination;
local accountability; building on
local strengths and skills;
promotion of collaboration,
participation, consumer choice,
flexibility, and a holistic approach
to health care. The Committees are
presently studying the resources
being made available through
Community Information Centres
and local libraries.
The Minister is presently holding
consultations with long term care
agencies from around the Province
to determine the further steps to be
taken. Locally, if readers have any
questions or concerns about long
term care, they may contact Shirley
Jones, Long Term Care Health
Planner for the District Health
The Ombudsman of Ontario's
District Officer will be visiting
Goderich on Wednesday, Sept. 27
to help the people of Goderich,
Huron and area with any
complaints they might have with
Ontario government organizations.
According ,to the Ombudsman,
Roberta Jamieson, "Ombudsman
Ontario marks this year as its 20th
anniversary in providing service to
the people across the province. We
have helped many thousands of
people with problems about the
provincial government over those
years. And we are trying very hard
to reach those people who know the
least about Ombudsman Ontario
services and may have the greatest
need for them."
Ombudsman Ontario is a neutral
Council at 272-1480.
The meeting also heard a talk by
Dr. Susan Tamblyn, Medical
Officer of Health, Perth County
Board of Health, who described the
activities of the Health Unit.
The Health Unit's concern is for
the preventive care, the promotion
of health and the health protection
of the whole population of Perth
County, within the resources
available to it.
Dr. Tamblyn reminded her
audience that heart disease, cancer
and stroke accounted for 60 per
cent of all deaths; while injuries are
the leading causes of death for
people aged one to 44 years.
The leading causes of premature
death are cancer, injuries and heart
disease. About half of these could
be prevented by controlling
smoking, diabetes, hypertension,
elevated serum cholesterol and
alcohol abuse.
A Rural Water Quality Study
released last April showed that 29
per cent of private wells tested had
unacceptable levels of bacteria.
The high immunization rate of
school children successfully
controls diseases like measles,
mumps and rubella. Proper
nutrition during childhood lays the
groundwork for a healthy later life;
poor eating leads to the very
opposite.
Looking to the immediate future,
Dr. Tamblyn noted that funding
cutbacks, new directions in long
term care and the need for more
community/Board of Health/
District Health Council information
exchange would occupy the Health
Unit.
The next meeting of the Huron
Perth District Health Council will
be held on Thursday, Sept. 28 at
South Huron Hospital in the
Boardroom in Exeter beginning at
6:30 p.m. Interested participants are
welcome to attend this public
meeting.
office for complaints against the
administration of provincial
government - ministries, agencies,
boards and commissions. The
Ombudsman decides cases based
on independent investigations and
tries to find resolutions that are
acceptable to everyone involved.
Mike Sauer, one of the
Ombudsman's District Officers for
Goderich, Huron and area, will be
available to meet confidentially
with members of the public. People
looking for help will find Mike in
