Jillian Houston, daughter of
Maxine and Murray Houston of the
Brussels area is beginning another
long swim season with the Huron
County Hurricane Swim Team.
As a result of a dislocated knee
and torn ligaments in early June,
Jillian took off the summer from
the team but continued to
rehabilitate with her bike and
playing full-back for the Brussels
PeeWees soccer team.
She spends 10 hours a week in
the pool over in Vanastra. During
practice she will swim 2000 metres
in various rep formations. Jillian's

The club was delighted to have
Mr. and Mrs. Jim Canning from
Australia bowling with us. They
are visiting their son who has a
sheep farm near Clifford, and they
have enjoyed bowling in Ontario
this summer.
Each year over 1,000 people die
prematurely in traffic-related
crashes and collisions. Over
100,000 are injured. Many are left
with life-long disabilities. 1991 is
the first year that injuries number
less than 100,000. In fact, there has
been 10 per cent decrease in injury
from 1990.
Huron/Perth Injury Prevention Committee
looking forward to the season as
she is ranked in the top three in the
front crawl, back crawl and breast
stroke. She is also the anchor for
the medley relay team.
Her biggest rivals are twin sisters
from Burlington. The three girls are
1/100ths of a second off in their
finishing times.
"We're best friends but when
we're on the blocks, it's to do the
best you can," says Jillian.
Her best time is 29 seconds flat
in the freestyle. The Canadian
record is 26.54 for 50-m freestyle.
She hopes someday to catch that
time.
Swimming comes naturally to
Jillian as her mom, Maxine, is a
certified swimming instructor and
coach at the Vanastra Recreation
Centre.
Rol McLulan, head coach of the
Hurricanes seemed very pleased
with Jillian's results last season.
She came home with a lot of
hardware and personal bests and
everyone is hoping for better
results. "Part of swimming is going
out and improving our times, not
only are you racing against other
swimmers but also the clock," says
Maxine.
Jillian will he swimming in the
Aqua 7 league and Swim Ontario
league.
