The movies in the form of a motion picture projected on a large screen
celebrates their first century this year. In 1895 the Lumiere brothers
presented the new medium's first public screening and within the year the
movies spread across most of Europe and the United States. The first
movies were actualities, films of everyday life and fantastic shorts like
those of magician Georges Melies, whose most famous title From The
Earth To The Moon was based on the popular Jules Verne novel.
Before 1910 most of the best films were coming from countries other
than the United States but all that was about to change thanks to numerous
inventive directors including D.W. Griffith and Raoul Walsh as well as
performers like Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford. The other major
factor was World War I which closed down European production and
allowed Hollywood to dominate the movie market after 1920. Kino Video
is currently offering five outstanding examples of pre-World War I
cinema under the blanket title of First American Features. All box office
hits in their day, my favourite of this group is Regeneration (1915) which
has been described by its director Raoul Walsh, "as the first feature length
gangster picture ever made". The story follows an Irish hoodlum
wonderfully played by stage actor Rockcliffe Fellowes and a woman
(Anna Q. Nilsson) who turns him away from a life of crime. As a matter
of fact Fellowes, who reminds me of a young Marlon Brando, has such a
magnetic personality I'm surprised to have not heard of him before now.
Filmed on location in the Bowery, Regeneration features appearances by
actual gangsters who along with the actors create a fascinating portrait of
New York City before the war. Long thought lost, like 80 per cent of all
silent films, this movie was discovered and rescued just before it
decomposed entirely. A fascinating film.
The other titles in this series includes The Cheat (1915), a drama of sex,
sadism and and sacrifice from Cecil B. DeMille and the melodrama
Traffic In Souls (1913) which purports to expose the horrors of forced
prostitution.
Thomas Ince's Civilization (1916) was an anti-war film that combines
spectacular battle scenes and religious symbolism.
Last but not least is From The Manger To The Cross (1912), the first
biblical epic to be filmed on location in the holy land. This special edition
has been colour tinted to match the original release prints. All in all a
fascinating look at the freewheeling and heady days of early movie
making. For more information on these and other classic silent films you
can call Kino's Canadian distributor at (416) 633-9079.
Among the new and unpreviewed releases you will find available this
week are Hideaway (Columbia/Tristar), a psychological thriller featuring
Jeff Goldblum as a man who narrowly escapes death and discovers he is
now telepathically linked to a deranged killer. (Rated R)
Freddy The Frog (MCA/Universal) is an animated family film about a
young prince who is turned into a frog by his wicked aunt. (Rated G)

Growing up
It stands 10 1/2 feet tall and came as a bit of a surprise.
When Lois Whittard and her husband, Bush, who hadn't
planted any sunflowers in the garden at the back of their
Brussels home, first saw this sprouting there, they
thought it was a melon.

Bible schoolers get Good News bracelet
Continued from page 3
Day Three was commitment,-one
of the most important things every
family needs.
Day Four was communication.
The children learned that
communication means speaking
kindly, telling the truth and
listening to others.
Day Five spoke of love. There is
a special place for each of us in
Gods family.
After the 20 minute story, the
children went to their classrooms'
and did corresponding newspapers
and colouring sheets. Special
guests attending from the
community were the Blyth PUC,
OPP and the Blyth fire truck. The
children loved to investigate each
and every vehicle and listened
intently to each guest as they
described their jobs and how they
keep the community safe.
went to the arena for the Superbook
Olympics/Hallelujah Hop Program
with Les and Jackie Cook. There
the children split into four groups
for the week, Scripture Stars, Go-
Getters, Whiz Kids, and Bible
Brains. Each team would
participate in Bible quizzes which
would determine their eligibility to
compete in the Mini-Olympic
games.
In the Hallelujah Hop portion of
the program the children were
taught Biblical truths in a '50s and
'60s style atmosphere. The children
were motivated by the cheers and
support of their team, and a great
sense of working together and
camaraderie developed.
On Friday all the children
received a special Good News
bracelet. Each of the seven beads
have a significant meaning: blue is
for creation, black is for sin, red is
for Jesus' blood, white is God's
salvation, gold is for the streets that
in heaven will shine, green is for
growing as a Christian, and clear is
for the spirit, that binds us without
twine.
On Sunday, Aug. 27, a special
Daily Vacation Bible School
presentation was held during the
morning worship service at the
Blyth Christian Reformed Church.
In this final celebration of the
week-long program, the children
participated by singing the songs
they had learned all week, while.
the leaders explained their
programs and shared insights they
had gained in their experiences in
the past week.
