June Jacklin earns
most lone hands
On Monday, Aug. 14 the
Belgrave Seniors boarded the bus
to see the Jubilee Concert at the
Roy Thompson Hall in Toronto.
There were 26 seniors.
They had dinner at the Town and
Country in Mississauga on the way
home.
The McBurney Reunion was held
on Sunday, Aug. 13 at the Belgrave
Institute Hall with 51 attending.
Robyn Garvey entertained the
children. Neil and Verna Hardie of
Listowel were president and
secretary for this year. Andrew and
Mary Margaret Smith of Kitchener
will be for the 1996 reunion, which
will be held at the Belgrave
Women's Institute Hall on the
second Sunday in August.
Relatives were present from
Wingham, Listowel, Neustadt,
London, Kitchener, Cambridge,
Seaforth, Goderich and Brussels.
The family of the late George
and Ivy Cook held a reunion in the
Belgrave arena on Sunday, Aug.
13. An afternoon of games, pictures
and visiting, enjoyed by over 100
people, was followed by apot luck
supper.
Several prizes were given out
including: oldest man, Wes Cook;
oldest lady, Annie Cook; youngest
Dorothy Dilworth, Karen, Paula
and Stacey Bowles hosted 10 tables
of euchre at the Ethel Hall, Monday
evening.
Winners were: 50/50 Dorothy
Hamilton; high lady, Jessie
Hotchkiss; low lady, Marguerite
Beirnes; high man, Esther Cun-
ningham; low man, George Pear-
son; most lone hands, June Jacklin,
Jim Smith; lucky table, Ken Craw-
ford, Keith Turnbull, Shirley Ver-
stoep and Hilda Holmes; tally card
Aside from some legal and per-
sonnel matters which were dis-
cussed in closed chambers, the
Aug. 5 meeting of West Wawanosh
council quickly dealt with the few
issues which were on the table.
Council approved special ar-
rangements for banking services
with the Canadian Imperial Bank of
Commerce in Wingham and autho-
rized Monteith, Monteith and Com-
person, Kimberley Woollett;
travelling the farthest, Karen Green
from Vancouver.
Happy Birthday was sung and
prizes given to four people having
birthdays: Marie Cook, Kimberley
Woollett, Stephen Lechinsky and
Jordan Weishar.
Relatives attended from B.C.,
Alberta, Sask., Man. Sault
Ste.Marie, Callander, Timmins,
Toronto, London and surrounding
area.
Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Cook's
daughters, Kandace, Alaina and
Jenna of Delaraine, Manitoba spent
time visiting his mother, Lorna
Cook and his brothers and sister.
Also visiting at the same home
was Doug Cook and Grcthe Burnett
of Audrie, Alberta.
Doug is presently home from
Mexico. All attended the Cook
reunion held in Belgrave.

Sara Anderson attended the 25th
wedding anniversary dinner party
celebration for Karen and Tom
Moy held at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. James Anderson in Guelph.
Betty Irwin has returned after
spending a few days holidaying at a
cottage near Bayfield.

attend
workshop
Mary Coultes, Wilma Higgins,
Alice Nicholson, Jean Nethery and
Ada Taylor of the Belgrave
Women's Institute attended the
London area Tweedsmuir History
Workshop at the Goderich
Township Community Centre in
Holmesville recently.
The Huron West District was
host for the meeting. Speakers
included Marcie Johnston of
Britton, provincial curator and Ron
Latham of the Huron County
Historical Society.
Campbells win
baseball draw
Jeremy and Justin Campbell,
sons of John and Linda Campbell,
were each selected winners in the
Kraft IGA Ernie Whitt Baseball
Academy contest . They entered the
contest at the IGA Grand Bend and
were notified by Purolator that they
had won.
They attended a four-day Ernie
Whitt Baseball Academy
instructional program from
Monday, Aug. 14 to Thursday,
Aug. 17 at Stronach Park in
London.
The Academy's baseball program
was designed by Whitt to provide
players of all skill levels with an
opportunity to learn more about the
game and to improve their baseball
and life skills.
Each participant was taught by
professional baseball instructors
who were selected by Whitt for
their knowledge of the game, their
ability to relate to youngsters and
the positive role model they
present.
The Academy ,was dedicated to
provide youngsters with the finest
of instruction utilizing the best of
equipment and proven teaching
techniques.
On Thursday, Aug. 17 the
Academy ended with a barbecue
for all participants and family
members followed by awards
presentation. Kraft Canada
provided lunch and refreshments
each day. Each participant was also
given an Ernie Whitt hat and t-
shirt.
Jeremy Campbell won an official
John Olerud 1993 wooden bat,
autographed by John. Jeremy won
it for the home run derby.
Each person was presented with a
Graduation Certificate having
successfully and enthusiastically
completed the course in advance
baseball techniques at the Ernie
Whitt Baseball Academy.

Reader's reward
Jason Stryker earned a mug full of jelly beans in the Blyth
Library's summer reading program. Children earned an
opportunity to guess the number of jelly beans for each
five books they read during the summer. Jason guessed
275 beans while the actual count was 279. Libraries from
across the county were involved in Favourites of Mine
reading program, which included crafts, games, stories
and songs.
