Tigers, Bulldogs tie
In there running
Wayne Lowe, left, presents, the B runner up trophy to
Hugh Nichol, right and Doug McArter, the manager and
coach of the Brussels Tigers. They were edged by the
Camlachie Rebels in the 24th annual Brussels (Men's
Fastball tournament held on the August long weekend.
Rebels nip Tigers
The Brussels Tigers returned to
the finals of the Brussels Fastball
Tournament for the first time since
1984 but were unable to join the
1973 Rockets as champions losing
2-1 to the Camlachie Rebels.
The Rebels broke a 1-1 tie with a
fifth inning two out opposite field
triple for the winning run.
Camlachie had opened the scoring
in the second but the Tigers fought
back to tie in the third. Brett
Clarkson went the opposite way
with a single, stole second, then
scored on a Doug Shaw infield
single.
The Tigers opened the
tournament with a 4-2 loss to the
Shakespeare Sox. The Sox broke a
1-1 tie with two runs in the fifth
and added an insurance run in the
seventh.
Game two saw the Tigers come
from behind for a 9-4 win over
Walton. The Brewers opened with
four runs in their first at bat.
Brussels replied with six in the
third, then added three more in the
fourth on a Tim Fritz home run.
Sunday morning the Tigers
advanced to the consolation final
with an 8-0 mercy of the London
PeeWees win
Tri-Cty opener
With the pitching team of Katie
Harrison and Krissy Dilworth, the
Brussels PeeWee girls turned
around an early setback in their
first tri-county playoff game, to
overtake visiting Monkton on Aug.
13.
Though Harrison was hit up for
five runs in the first, the squad
brought Brussels to within three
before the inning was out.
The good arm of Dilworth gave
the girls an opportunity to take the
lead in the second when they
scored four runs off the bats of
Crystal Semple and Dilworth, who
both hit homers.
The team took a 6-6 tie to the
bottom of the fourth, when they tal-
lied another four to take the lead
for good.
Monkton rallied for one, but
ended the game with a 10-7 deficit.
The Brussels Tigers and
Bulldogs are tied at one win apiece
in their Huron County fastball
playoff series with the deciding
game scheduled for Friday at 8
p.m.
The Dogs opened the series with
a 3-2 rain shortened win Friday
night. Mike Watson singled home
Greg Mulvey for the winning run in
the fifth inning, minutes before a
downpour officially ended the
game. Andrew McCutcheon
allowed five base runners through
five innings while Mulvey batted
three for three.
In the second of their best of
three WOAA series, the Belgrave
Bantam Boys took on the visiting
Varna squad, going down to a
crashing defeat.
After taking the first game by a
score of 12-11, Belgrave couldn't
keep up with the hard hitting oppo-
nents.
Varna was held hitless in the
first, allowing the hometeam to
take a five run lead off the bats of
Adam Garniss, Dean Walker, Luke
Lockridge, Rob Burkholder and
Marc Alexander.
Mike Barfoot contributed with
two RBIs.
The defense fell when Varna
strode to the plate in the top of the
second as 11 runs scored.
Unable to mount an attack, Bel-
Doug Shaw hit two for two for
the Tigers with Todd Uhrig taking
the loss despite striking out eight.
Game two saw the Tigers score
seven times in their first two at bats
enroute to an 8-3 win.
Steve Fritz and Uhrig each batted
three for four with Todd enjoying a
two-run homer five RB game.
For the Dogs, Brad Beuerman,
Dean Rutledge and Brian McArter
all hit two for three.
Doug Conley pitched the win
with relief by Uhrig while
McCutcheon and Dave Smith
shared the duties for the Bulldogs.
grave was held to only three runs
through the fourth.
Crossing the plate were Lock-
ridge, Burkholder and Jamie

Perrie earns
bronze at
nationals
With hopes of placing in the top
five at the Canadian Junior Track
and Field Championships in
Abbotsford, B.C., Lori Perrie of
RR3 Brussels, met and far sur-
passed her goal.
With a final throw in the discus
of 44.86 metres, 3.82 metres
greater than her personal best, Lori
triumphed with a third place finish.
Her impressive results came as a
surprise to her because her coach,
John Allen of the London-Western
Track and Field Club, had been
unable to attend the meet with her.
Her bronze-medal throw was not
a one-time occurrence; Lori threw
43 metres in the qualifying round.
Lori also placed above her
national ranking, with a personal
best in the shot put competition,
finishing with a seventh.
She tossed 11.41 metres com-
pared to her usual throws in the
high 10s.
Though only the top two finish-
ers are invited to compete for Cana-
da at international events, a conflict
of schedules for the second place
finisher may allow Lori to partici-
pate in the Canada-U.S. dual meet
in Miami.
