For students from Europe, South
America and parts of Canada, the Lions
Youth Exchange Program offers the
opportunity to meet friends from around
the world, discover the differences and
similarities of other cultures and learn that
all people can have fun together,
particularly at Canada's Wonderland, no
matter what their homeland or nationality.
Silvio Zancanaro, 19, of Campos Novas
in southern Brazil, has been staying with
Kittie and Don MacGregor and family of
RR 1, Londesboro, since arriving in the
area several weeks ago.
Silvio, who freely admitted to being "no
very good with English", seemed to make
himself well understood and his host father
teased him about his many girlfriends from
the exchange student camp which he
attended during the third week of July.
While at the camp, which is sponsored
by the District Lions Clubs for all 24
exchange students (plus one hamster),
Silvio says his favourite activity, aside
from riding the Top Gun roller coaster at
Wonderland, was learning to play baseball.
With the use of a diagram, Silvio was
able to convey the message that he played

outfield, whether it was right or left, no
one is sure. He even hit a grand slam.
Entering his third year of accounting
studies at university back home, Silvio is
preparing to follow in his family's
footsteps. His father owns an accounting
firm, his brother is a bank clerk, his sister
works at his father's company as a
bookkeeper and his mother is a secretary.
Coming from a country which has a
latitude south of the equator similar to the
distance Florida is north of the line, Silvio
says the weather is cold at this time of the
year and they do receive short-lived
snowfalls because of the altitude above sea
level.
In the fanning regions outside Campos
Novas, which has a population of 50,000
including the suburbs, there are soybeans,
maize and apple operations as well as
cattle and horse farms.
Just a few of the other sights visited by
Silvio included Kitchener's farmers'
market, Niagara Falls, the Bruce Peninsula,
Port Elgin and London.
For the MacGregors, "the experience has
been wonderful". "We have really enjoyed
it," says Kittie.
The MacGregors have two daughters,
Katie, 14, and Elizabeth, 10.
Katheryne's host family, Thelma and
Sam Dougherty and children Karla, 17, and
Steven, eight, of RR1 Londesboro, kept the
Irish lass very busy during her stay.
