THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 2, 1995. PAGE 9.
July 29 was the year-end
tournament for the PeeWee soccer
squad.
Blyth's first game at 9 was
against a strong Goderich team.
This game seemed to be
determined by a shoot out with
fantastic plays going both ways and
awesome goaltending at both ends.
But with the last play of the game
at Blyth's end, Goderich came up
with a 1-0 win with only five
seconds left in the game.
Game two was at 11 against
Wingham and again Blyth played a
very strong game. With 20 minute
haves they had to take advantage of
their opportunities, which they did.
Darryl Gerrits and Dan Egli set up
John Eric Pardys for number one of
the game. He got the second of the
game with Gerrits and Kelly Boven
assisting. Tammy Walker made a
long kick up the field to send
Jeremy VanAmersfoort in alone to
make it 3-0.
Tom Egli went to work getting
three in a row for a hat trick with
Pardys and Gerrits assisting on his
first. Gerrits assisted again on a
throw in to Pardys with a nice cross
pass for the assist on Egli's third.
Jud Hakkers got number seven
for Blyth as VanAmersfoort and
Boven put him in the clear. Dan
Egli got his second of the game
with the assist going to his brother,
Tom.
Gerrits got his fifth assist of the
game putting Boven in the clear to
beat the keeper for the ninth and
final goal of the game.
This put Blyth into the semi-
finals against the Lucknow squad
which had only played one game so
far. Action got underway at 2 and
the heat and pressure seemed to
take its toll. Lucknow was eager
and Blyth could not outdo them
getting up out of the tournament
with a 2-0 loss.
This ended Blyth PeeWees'
soccer for the season.
Coach Herb Van Amersfoort
says he is proud of the sportsman-
ship and talent they've displayed
this summer.
Thanks to Tom Egli and Jeremy
Van Amersfoort, two Mosquito
players who helped out and played
well for the PeeWees.
Dan Egli and Jeff Cowan were
the strong goaltenders. Full backs
Walker, Hakkers, Jamie Black, Dan
Egli contributed outstanding
defence while Gerrits, Boven,
Cowan were strong half backs.
April Van Amersfoort, Mike
Courtney, Mike Ansley, Diane
Mason, Pardys, Johnathan Kochis
had some great offence play. "It
was great to coach this team this
year", says Van Amersfoort.
Bantams win
Some solid pitching helped Blyth
Bantam Boys to an 11-1 trouncing
of a hosting Winthrop team, July
26.
Belgrave started slow with no
runs in the first. Then one in the
second scored by Mike Barfoot was
eliminated by Winthrop in the bot-
tom half of the inning. Both teams
were scoreless in the third, then
Dean Walker put Belgrave ahead
once more in the fourth.
Not only did the visitors hang on
to the lead, but a nine run attack put
the game pretty much out of reach
for the hosts. Scoring in the fifth
were Marc Alexander, Robbie
McGee, Ryan Fear, Jamie McCal-
lum, Adam Garniss, Rob Hill, Bar-
foot, Walker and Jeremy Campbell.
On July 30, Belgrave began a
WOAA series with Varna.
Playing in Belgrave the hosts
edged the visiting team by one for
an 2-11 victory.
Vama struck in the first with one
run, but Belgrave moved ahead
when Walker and Luke Lockridge
crossed the plate.
The second inning ended in a two
all tie as the visitors tagged one
more while shutting out Belgrave
in the home half.
Belgrave took the lead in the
third once more when McCallum
and Walker crossed the plate after
Varna had increased their score to
three in the top of the inning.
Varna tied it once more with a
run in the fourth while Belgrave
failed to move ahead in the bottom
half.
Vama made things interesting in
the fifth when two runs crossed the
plate, but Belgrave managed that at
home, thanks to a homerun by
Walker. Also crossing the plate
were McCallum and Adam Gar-
niss.
Each team scored five in the
sixth which gave the home team a
narrow series win. Walker belted
another homerun while McCallum,
Garniss, Campbell and Michael
Sanders also made it home.
Sharing pitching duties for Bel-
grave were McCallum and Camp-
bell while Garniss was catcher.
