Sometimes with the volume of new releases that cross my desk I miss
an occasional good movie especially when it looks like just another dumb
crinik drama. So I'm glad to report that Bad Company *** 1/2
(Touchstone) is a first rate thriller. Set in the shadowy world of corporate
espionage the film focuses on a former CIA agent (Laurence Fishbume)
who becomes involved with a group of unscrupulous spies led by Frank
Langella and Ellen Barkin. Bad Company is intriguing, sexy and a dandy
bit of 90s film noir. Recommended. (Rated 18-A)
Sara Jessica Parker stars in Miami Rhapsody ** (Hollywood) as a young
woman forced to confront the impact a marriage proposal will have on her
carefree lifestyle. I for one found this film to be nothing more than a
pretentious and blatant rip off of the work of Woody Allen. Writer and
director David Frankel has not only copied Woody's filmmaking style, but
borrowed dialogue from his films as well. Woody should sue. Yawn!
(Rated 14-A)
When 1 was a kid I enjoyed reading the new classic E.C. horror comics
published by William Gaines. During the 1950s these comics caused a
furor among parents and other do-gooders who were appalled by such
titles as Tales From The Crypt and Vault Of Horror, eventually driving
Gaines to cease publication. In the 1970s several entertaining British films
were made capitalizing on the E. C. titles and the comic books were
reissued several y ears ago when the HBO Tales From The Crypt series
became popular. Now the old crypt keeper has become a movie star again
with Tales From The Crypt: Demon Knight *1/2 (MCA/Universal) but
gone are the truly scary elements which are replaced by grizzly, repugnant
and foul mouthed excess. (Rated R)
Among the week's other new and unpreviewed releases are The Brady
Bunch Movie (Paramount) a reworking of the 1970s TV series. (Rated
PG-13)
In Born To Be Wild (Warner - $22.96 or less) a troubled teenager and a
400 pound gorilla hit the road to Canada. (Rated G)
Director John Carpenter returns to the old horror movie stand with in
The Mouth of Madness (Alliance) which features Sam Neill as a hapless
insurance investigator who discovers a book that possesses supernatural
powers. (Rated 18-A)
In the classic movie department are several more 12 chapter cliffhanger
serials from the vaults of Republic Pictures. One of my favourites in this
package is Hawk of the Wilderness (1938), a fun adventure about
shipwrecked survivors in the far north starring former Olympic champion
Herman Brix.
Also enjoyable are Dangers of the Canadian Mounted (1948), Man With
the Steel Whip (1954) and Republic's final cliffhanger King of the
Carnival (1955) which was made up almost entirely of stock footage from
previous serials. These and many other Republic serials have been
reduced to $19.95, not bad for three to four hours of entertainment.

Use 18th century skills
at Heritage rendezvous
For the first time in the Blyth Festival's history an author was called on stage for the opening
night curtain call when This Year, Next Year opened July 19, but then this was no ordinary
author. Norah Harding (left) became a playwright for the first time at age 71 with this play, the
story of meeting her Canadian husband in England during World War II. Cast members
including (from left) Barbara Worthy, Jacklyn Francis (partially hidden) Deborah Drakeford
and Harry Booker presented her with a cast photograph as she received a standing ovation.

Doon Heritage Crossroads will
be the site of the annual Black
Powder Rendezvous on Sunday,
Aug. 6 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Each year folks dressed as fur
traders and trappers gather on the
Willow Green at Doon to re-enact a
fur trading rendezvous from the
18th century. A rendezvous was a
chance for the native and Metis
trappers to sell their winter's catch
to the company men who had come
up from Montreal. They could trade
for needed pieces of equipment
such as cast iron cooking pots,
warm blankets or food supplies.
The rendezvous was also a time
for socializing as the trapper lived a
lonely life in the woods and now
for a week or so he could meet with
his friends and trade some tall tales.
One of the largest summer
rendezvous occurred at Fort
William in northern Ontario but
there was some trapping in this area
as well.
The re-enactment at Doon will
have visitors travelling even further
back in time as rendezvous
participants will use only 18th
century skills; starting their
campfire with friction or flint,
making all of their food without
modern conveniences and
appreciating basic things like
wood, fire and water.
