Blyth woman co-ordinates injury prevention plan
The Huron-Perth Injury Preven-
tion Committee is pleased to
announce they have hired Brenda
Edgar of Blyth as project-co-
ordinator for the first phase of
"Living Safely: Creating an Injury
Prevention Action Plan for Huron
and Perth Counties".
The Huron/Perth Injury
Prevention Committee is a group of
interested service providers who
first met in fall 1994 following an
Injury Prevention Workshop held
that spring. This group applied for
HELEN JOHNS
MPP gets
Health Ministry
appointment
Premier Mike Harris has
appointed Huron MPP Helen Johns
Parliamentary Assistant to the
Minister of Health.
"A campaign focus was the
quality of health care in the
province. I believe that quality
health care must be sustained and
accessible to all people in Ontario,"
Johns said.
"As a financial manager, I
believe the challenge of this
position is to balance health care
needs and the financial realities of
1995. I am especially pleased to be
able to play such an important role
in this area of government."
The role taken on by Johns as a
Parliamentary Assistant is to
provide support for Jim Wilson, the
Cabinet Minister in Health, by
preparing legislation and bringing it
before the House for consideration.
Johns is also responsible to the
Legislature for the Health
portfolios when the Minister cannot
be present.
"The appointment of Parliamen-
tary Assistants round out the
legislative team we will need to
implement our agenda of major,
positive change for Ontario," said
Premier Mike Harris in making the
announcement.
"I have great confidence in Mrs.
Johns. She is a hard working
individual who will enhance the
work which must be done in the
Ministry of Health," Harris said.
and received a Community Injury
Prevention grant from the Ontario
Ministry of Health.
The goals of the program are
three fold:
• develop an injury prevention
action program for Huron and Perth
Counties to address the following
issues:
- motor vehicle occupant injury in
the 16- 24 age group
- motor vehicle occupant injury
for all age groups
- cyclist injury in the five - 15 age
group
The County of Huron is in the
process of implementing 9-1-1 and
municipal addressing. The dispatch
of emergency services is becoming
increasingly centralized with
drivers not necessarily from the
local area. Having a common
method of identifying properties is
now a necessity.
Each property in the Township of
East Wawanosh must have a
unique address consisting of a
property number and road or line
name. Therefore concessions will
now be known as "Roads" and
sideroads as "Lines".
Following are proposed road and
line names:

amounting to $29,609.70, was the
lowest of four tenders received.
Construction is expected to
commence in late July and

general amendment to the bylaw.
Council agreed and gave approval
for the building permit to be issued.

vive," Scrimgeour said.

individuals' groups, agencies and
organizations into a working group
• ensure co-ordination and
advocacy for programs addressing
drinking and driving in young
adults.
In Canada, more than 9,000
people per year lose their lives to
injury. Many thousands more are
injured.

injuries. In Ontario, injury is the
leading cause of death for people
under the age of 44 years and the
fourth leading cause of death
overall. The Huron and Perth Injury
Prevention Committee clarified the
above five points as key issues for
these counties.
Edgar, as project co-ordinator,
will be involved in contacting
citizens, groups, agencies and
organizations in the two counties to
assist with the development of the
action plan and to provide

Municipal addresses will be
displayed on a property identifi-
cation sign in front of each

been suggested that five digit
municipal numbers be assigned at
regular distance intervals. A
municipal number would be
available every 10 metres.
