S ports Tigers lose 2 in weekend play Despite some all-out plays like this one between the diving Tigers shortstop Steve Fritz and second baseman Gary Pipe, the Seaforth Coops Sports team was on the offensive, thoroughly trouncing their hosts in a game played on Friday night. On Saturday, July 15 the Brussels Baracudas swim team went to its first swim meet and put on an impressive show with several of the 11 person team stroking to top five finishes. The day's races started with the medley relays. Brussels had one team, an open girls team, in this event. Members are: Christina DeWit, back crawl; Lisa Blake, breast stroke; Trish Bonsma, 'fly; and Katie Clark, front crawl. They finished third. Drew Thomas, Aaron Richmond, Michelle DeWit, Matt Elliott, Katie Clark, Ashley Gropp, Lisa Blake, and Trish Bonsma participated in the freestyle events. Trish placed sixth in the open girls category. • Drew Thomas, Aaron Richmond, Michelle Smith, Michelle DeWit, On July 10, the Brussels PeeWee boys were visited by a strong team from Blyth. Blyth opened the scoring with one run in the first. Brussels responded well, scoring seven runs in the bottom half of the inning. Joel Kellington, Nathan Garland, Jason Armstrong, Terry Nichol, Chris Mason, Justin Ruttan and Joshua Gropp scored the runs. Blyth came back, however, adding six runs to their total in the top of the second. The Brussels offense failed to regain the form it had in the first inning, adding only one run in the bottom of the second. The visitors took advantage of this, scoring three runs in the top of the third to take the lead. Their strong defense held on for a 13-9 victory. On Monday evening, Brussels Matt Elliott, Katie Clark, Samantha Thomas and Ashley Gropp competed for Brussels in back crawl. Matt (11 and 12-year-old boys) and Ashley (13 and 14-year- old girls) each placed fifth in their respective categories, while Drew placed fourth in boys eight and under group. Breast stroke participants were Matt Elliott, Ashley Gropp, Christina DeWit, and Lisa Blake, who finished in fourth in the open girls event. The only competitor in butterfly races was Trish Bonsma, who placed fourth. Freestyle relays followed and were the last event of the day. Brussels took the lead in their half of the inning, when Mason, Tyler Bragg, Armstrong and Kellington crossed the plate. Winthrop regained the lead, scoring seven times in the top of the second. After Brussels started to chip away at the lead in the bottom of the second, with Mike Cooper and Nathan Garland coming in to score, they finished the comeback in the bottom of the third. They scored eight runs that inning, with Gropp, Mason, Bragg, Kellington, Mark Kroll, Nichol, Cooper and Patrick Gilkes scoring. That allowed the home team to sneak out a 14-10 victory. The Brussels Tigers lost both games played on the weekend and now hold a 114 won-loss record in Huron County fastball. Friday night Seaforth Coops Sports went home with a 14-6 win. Brett Clarkson batted two for three while Steve Fritz, Doug Shaw and Greg Fritz were two for four. The Goderich Canadian Tire PeeWee soccer squad played host to Blyth July 5. The previous game was a very close and well played game and this proved to be the same. After a few good scoring chances Goderich got on the scoreboard not once but twice to end the first half. The second half was much the same and each team notched one goal each. Kelly Boven and Jeff Cowan set up Dan Egli, who, with his speed, beat the defense and keeper for Blyth's lone goal. Although Blyth played well they handed Goderich the 3-1 win. July 12, Blyth played Lucknow in Belgrave. Mike Courtney set April VanAmersfoort to make a nice cross over to John Eric, who tucked-- it in the corner. Lucknow came back shortly after to tie the game at one all. Cowan's beautiful corner kick up and over to Pardys again beat the keeper with a nice header to put Blyth in the lead again. At Doug Conley took the loss striking out five. Sunday night in Belgrave the Blue Devils moved into a first place tie with the Tigers after winning 6-2. Joel Pegg's three run homer in the third broke a 2-2 tie and handed Brussels their first road loss of the • season. close range VanAmersfoort tapped in Blyth's third and final goal with Boven and Tom Egli maneuvering the ball for the assists. The second half of the game was also very well played but Lucknow came back with two quick unanswered goals to make the final A strong effort by the Brussels Squirts in the dying minutes of the ball game allowed them to pull a win out of the bag against Gorrie, on July 11. Although the pitcliirig team of Brian Oldfield and Matt McCall struck out five batters, it was their inability to get the ball in the strike zone which led to 10 walks, leaving the home town squad down 4-1 at the end of the third. The bats came alive in the bot- tom of the fourth after Oldfield jump started the offense with a Doug Shaw batted three for three with Steve Fritz going two for three. Conley went the distance for the Tigers with Keith Todd pitching the win for Belgrave. The Tigers are at home tonight to the Zurich Rangers at 9 p.m. Friday night the Lieury Red Sox are in town also for a 9 p.m. start. score 3-3. The Blyth team played a very solid and beautiful passing game. Thanks to Tom Egli and Jeremy VanAmersfoort, Mosquito recruits for helping out. The next game is July 19 in Goderich. Belgrave and Blyth Bantam boys ball teams met July 11, the spectators saw two dozen runs cross the plate. Belgrave started slowly with only Adam Garniss coming home in the first. Blyth evened the score before Belgrave took what appeared to be a commanding lead through one and a half. Four runs were knocked in, scor- ing Rob Burkholder, Luke Lock- ridge, Ryan Fear and Tom Pfeiffer. Edging back, Blyth notched two in the frame to bring the score to 5- 3 for Belgrave. With Burkholder taking the lead, Lockridge and Fear aided in the three-run third. Battling to within one, Blyth scored four in the bottom of the third and was able to take the lead for the first time in the game after holding Belgrave scoreless in the fourth. Seeing the game slipping away, down 9-8, Belgrave brought their total to 12 when Mike Barfoot, Jamie McCallum, Fear and Pfeiffer came home. Unable to hold the three-run lead, Belgrave defense let in three by the home town team and had to settle fora 12-12 tie.
