Tigers lose 2 in weekend play
Despite some all-out plays like this one between the diving Tigers shortstop Steve Fritz and
second baseman Gary Pipe, the Seaforth Coops Sports team was on the offensive,
thoroughly trouncing their hosts in a game played on Friday night.
On Saturday, July 15 the
Brussels Baracudas swim team
went to its first swim meet and put
on an impressive show with several
of the 11 person team stroking to
top five finishes.
The day's races started with the
medley relays. Brussels had one
team, an open girls team, in this
event. Members are: Christina
DeWit, back crawl; Lisa Blake,
breast stroke; Trish Bonsma, 'fly;
and Katie Clark, front crawl. They
finished third.
Drew Thomas, Aaron Richmond,
Michelle DeWit, Matt Elliott, Katie
Clark, Ashley Gropp, Lisa Blake,
and Trish Bonsma participated in
the freestyle events. Trish placed
sixth in the open girls category. •

On July 10, the Brussels PeeWee
boys were visited by a strong team
from Blyth.
Blyth opened the scoring with
one run in the first. Brussels
responded well, scoring seven runs
in the bottom half of the inning.
Joel Kellington, Nathan Garland,
Jason Armstrong, Terry Nichol,
Chris Mason, Justin Ruttan and
Joshua Gropp scored the runs.
Blyth came back, however,
adding six runs to their total in the
top of the second. The Brussels
offense failed to regain the form it
had in the first inning, adding only
one run in the bottom of the
second. The visitors took advantage
of this, scoring three runs in the top
of the third to take the lead.
Their strong defense held on for
a 13-9 victory.
On Monday evening, Brussels
Matt Elliott, Katie Clark, Samantha
Thomas and Ashley Gropp
competed for Brussels in back
crawl. Matt (11 and 12-year-old
boys) and Ashley (13 and 14-year-
old girls) each placed fifth in their
respective categories, while Drew
placed fourth in boys eight and
under group.
Breast stroke participants were
Matt Elliott, Ashley Gropp,
Christina DeWit, and Lisa Blake,
who finished in fourth in the open
girls event.
The only competitor in butterfly
races was Trish Bonsma, who
placed fourth. Freestyle relays
followed and were the last event of
the day. The open girls team: Trish
Bonsma, Ashley Gropp, Christina
DeWit and Lisa Blake finished
fourth.
was visited by Winthrop, who
opened the scoring with three runs
in the top of the first. Brussels took
the lead in their half of the inning,
when Mason, Tyler Bragg,
Armstrong and Kellington crossed
the plate.
Winthrop regained the lead,
scoring seven times in the top of
the second. After Brussels started
to chip away at the lead in the
bottom of the second, with Mike
Cooper and Nathan Garland
coming in to score, they finished
the comeback in the bottom of the
third.
They scored eight runs that
inning, with Gropp, Mason, Bragg,
Kellington, Mark Kroll, Nichol,
Cooper and Patrick Gilkes scoring.
That allowed the home team to
sneak out a 14-10 victory.
The Brussels Tigers lost both
games played on the weekend and
now hold a 114 won-loss record in
Huron County fastball.
Friday night Seaforth Coops
Sports went home with a 14-6 win.
Brett Clarkson batted two for
three while Steve Fritz, Doug Shaw
and Greg Fritz were two for four.
The Goderich Canadian Tire
PeeWee soccer squad played host
to Blyth July 5. The previous game
was a very close and well played
game and this proved to be the
same.
After a few good scoring chances
Goderich got on the scoreboard not
once but twice to end the first half.
The second half was much the
same and each team notched one
goal each. Kelly Boven and Jeff
Cowan set up Dan Egli, who, with
his speed, beat the defense and
keeper for Blyth's lone goal.
Although Blyth played well they
handed Goderich the 3-1 win.
July 12, Blyth played Lucknow
in Belgrave.
Mike Courtney set April
VanAmersfoort to make a nice
cross over to John Eric, who tucked--
it in the corner. Lucknow came
back shortly after to tie the game at
one all. Cowan's beautiful corner
kick up and over to Pardys again
beat the keeper with a nice header
to put Blyth in the lead again. At
Doug Conley took the loss striking
out five.
Sunday night in Belgrave the
Blue Devils moved into a first
place tie with the Tigers after
winning 6-2.
Joel Pegg's three run homer in
the third broke a 2-2 tie and handed
Brussels their first road loss of the
• season.
close range VanAmersfoort tapped
in Blyth's third and final goal with
Boven and Tom Egli maneuvering
the ball for the assists. This ended
the first half.
The second half of the game was
also very well played but Lucknow
came back with two quick
unanswered goals to make the final
A strong effort by the Brussels
Squirts in the dying minutes of the
ball game allowed them to pull a
win out of the bag against Gorrie,
on July 11.
Although the pitcliirig team of
Brian Oldfield and Matt McCall
struck out five batters, it was their
inability to get the ball in the strike
zone which led to 10 walks, leaving
the home town squad down 4-1 at
the end of the third.
The bats came alive in the bot-
tom of the fourth after Oldfield
jump started the offense with a
Doug Shaw batted three for three
with Steve Fritz going two for

the Tigers with Keith Todd

clash in high-scoring tie
When the hard-hitting. Belgrave
and Blyth Bantam boys ball teams
met July 11, the spectators saw two
dozen runs cross the plate.
Belgrave started slowly with only
Adam Garniss coming home in the
first.
Blyth evened the score before
Belgrave took what appeared to be
a commanding lead through one
and a half.
Four runs were knocked in, scor-
ing Rob Burkholder, Luke Lock-
ridge, Ryan Fear and Tom Pfeiffer.
Edging back, Blyth notched two
in the frame to bring the score to 5-
3 for Belgrave.
With Burkholder taking the lead,
Lockridge and Fear aided in the
three-run third.
Battling to within one, Blyth
scored four in the bottom of the
third and was able to take the lead
for the first time in the game after
holding Belgrave scoreless in the
fourth.
Seeing the game slipping away,
down 9-8, Belgrave brought their
total to 12 when Mike Barfoot,
Jamie McCallum, Fear and Pfeiffer
came home.
Unable to hold the three-run lead,
Belgrave defense let in three by the
home town team and had to settle
fora 12-12 tie.
Belgrave got a great performance
from their pitching/catching duos
of Jeremy Campbell, who pitched
for the first four innings, and catch-
er Garniss as well as McCallum
and Fear who finished the match.
