As long as proper zoning changes
can be arranged, Brussels' old fire
hall will soon have a new owner.
Village council, at its July 4
meeting, accepted the tender of
Keith McLean and Glen McLean
for purchase of the building at a
price of $23,359. It was the highest
of two bids received for the
Thomas St. building which became
surplus when the new fire hall was
occupied earlier this year. Council
had placed a reserve bid of $18,900
on the building.
The tender price is subject to the

Changes to the Village of Brus-
sels swimming pool fence bylaw
will be considered at a future meet-
ing of council.
Clerk-Treasurer Donna White
told councillors at their July 4
meeting, that the current bylaw has
been in place nearly 20 years. The
bylaw had called for the fencing of
any pool more than 12 inches deep
but with the growth of decorative
The digital camera for the new
Ontario driver's license card has
been installed at the Brussels driver
and vehicle license issuing office,
on Turnberry St.
The new license is a one-part
machine readable plastic card, sim-
ilar in appearance to a credit card,
with a digitized photograph and
signature. It features a magnetic
stripe containing driver informa-
tion.
Joan Bernard, who operates the
Brussels office, says that as this
new card is less easy to duplicate,
thus reducing the chances for fraud,
people are encouraged to come in
and update their license now,
though it is not mandatory that they
do so.

Firefighter
injured
A Brussels firefighter was taken
to Wingham hospital Monday, July
3 after a hose came off a dry chem-
ical extinguisher and struck him in
the face.
Brian Deitner, was treated and
released that day.
The firefighters had been called
to a tractor fire at the Conc. 4, Mor-
ris Twp. property of Allen Cardiff.
Fire Chief Murray McArter says
the cause of the blaze was electrical
malfunction. He estimates the dam-
age to the tractor at $12,000.
OPP investigate
broken window
Wingham OPP are investigating
a case of mischief, which occurred
at The Ark in Brussels on July 7.
Police were called after a broken
window was discovered at the
building, located on the east side of
Tumberry St., across from the post
office.
Anyone with information is
asked to contact the police at 357-

to allow a car wash to be built on
the site. Currently the property is
zoned core commercial but a core
commercial "special" designation
will have to be obtained for the
new owners to carry out their plans.
Meanwhile, because of the
change in governments in Queen's
Park, the date for the official open-
ing ceremonies for the new fire hall
has still not been set. Because the
building was built under the feder-
al-provincial infrastructure pro-
gram, officials from both
governments must be invited to the
opening.
garden ponds, the law is now too
restrictive. A proposed change
would see only pools more than 2
feet deep require fencing.
Another possible change is to
require periodic renewals of the
certificate of approval from the
chief building official. This would
make sure that people who had
originally installed a proper fence
maintained it up to the standards in
the law.
obtain their first license will have
their photo taken. This, along with
the person's signature, is then elec-
tronically transmitted to a central
computer database.
The new driver's license will be
mailed directly to the individual
within 10 days.
It is expected that all Ontario
drivers' licenses will be converted
by the year 2000.
