Getting underway
The first leg of the new ball diamond in Brussels got started on Saturday as community
volunteers and experts installed the line to supply the drain for the park, which is to be
located at the south end of the BMG arena. Mike Thomas, an engineer and co-chair of the
Park Recreational Development Committee gets in the trench to connect the two 12 inch
drainage pipes, which will tie into the Nichol Drain system. McKerchers donated the
backhoe for the task, while many other local people stopped by to help later that afternoon.
Work continues this week when Ryans move in the bulldozers to set the grades which will
ensure that the water drains off the field into the drain, rather than neighbouring properties.

County continues
landfill site search
Despite pleas from Ashfield
Township residents and indications
the rules of the game in waste man-
agement may be changing with the
new Progressive Conservative
Government in Queen's Park,
Huron County councillors appear
adamant in continuing the current
search for a county-wide landfill
site.
Council voted to continue the
investigation of site A3, the only
one of 11 original sites still remain-
ing in the current round of the
search for a site for the county's
garbage. The site is located in Ash-
field Twp. southwest of Lucknow.
Council also authorized paying
$28,975 to the consultants on the
project for work involving identify-
ing soil types on the candidate
sites.
At least one-councillor, Blyth's
Reeve Mason Bailey, objected to
council making more of a commit-
ment to the current search. Bailey
continued his campaign to have
council look at options other than
landfill. Speaking for his own
council, Bailey said, "We do not

want another landfill site in our
community and we do not want to
impose our garbage on anyone else.
We are opposed to spending any
more money on a landfill site until
other options have been explored."
"I don't expect we will be able to
afford to build the kind of plant the
rest of the world is using in a very
satisfactory manner. I do visualize
that a larger community will be
building the kind of site that the
rest of the world is using."
In addition, he said, waste that
was once thought to be a costly
problem, is now becoming a valu-
able resource. "It won't surprise me
if private industry will get into the
business and it (garbage) will be
valuable. We need to rethink this
the way Toronto (the new govern-
ment) is rethinking."
Bailey received a -round of
applause from Ashfield residents
sitting in the_sallery. Earlier three
representatives of Concerned Citi-
zens of Ashfield and Area had
addressed council asking for a halt
to the current plans. Donald McNay
