Leona and Jim Armstrong of Brussels had surprise visitors for the long weekend when a
group of hang gliders and their power glider tow plane dropped in. The group of 10 flyers,
from the Grand Valley Hang Gliding Shop and the K-W Hang Gliding Club, were in the area
for a competition held on a farm between Blyth and Auburn. The tow glider was heading to
Blyth on Thursday evening when confronted with a thunderstorm. When the winds forced
pilot Armand Acchione to land on the Armstrong's airstrip, the couple welcomed him into
their home. The gliders were invited back after the competition, for some lifts from the strip.
Gliders can fly several kilometres from one lift if thermal air currents can be found. Some
,pilots had flown to the Walkerton area from Brussels while others were heading to Owen
Sound.

You're invited to cast a line at the
Family Fishing Derby being held
on Saturday, July 8, at Falls
Reserve Conservation Area
(FRCA) at Benmiller. The event
begins at 9 a.m. The derby is a
perfect way to help your family
discover the joys of fishing, and to
get acquainted with this scenic
conservation area.
Prizes will be awarded in three
age categories, five and under, six

merchants in the area have donated
supplies and prizes for the event.
The derby is also being supported
by the Maitland Valley Conserva-
tion Authority and the Maitland
Conservation Foundation.
Registration is free for children
five years of age and under, $3 for
children six to 12 years of age and

If you knew your best friend was
in danger, wouldn't you want to
help? Well, our best animal friends,
the dogs and cats who share our
lives, are in a crisis called pet
overpopulation.
The good news is that the
solutions are within reach and the
bad news is that many pet owners
still refuse to believe that there is
even a problem at all.
But can my one dog or cat really
be responsible? Male or female,
absolutely.
Why are there so many dogs and
cats? Dogs can reproduce twice a
year beginning as young as six
months of age. In just six years,
two dogs and their offspring can
theoretically be the source of
67,000 puppies.
Cats are able to have three litters
per year, and are even more
prolific. Theoretically, over a seven
year period, two cats and their
offspring can produce 420,000
kittens.
According to estimates, just one
of every five animals born will find
a home. While there is an estimated
4.5 million households in Canada
that own dogs or cats, or both -
there are simply just not enough
good homes for them all.
The greatest preventable cruelty
inflicted upon dogs and cats is pet
overpopulation. The single most
effective and humanitarian solution
lies in encouraging responsible pet
ownership by reducing the number
prizes. Lunch is being provided for
participants and certificates will be
awarded to all children taking part
in the derby.
The Family Fishing Derby is part
of the second annual Ontario
Family Fishing Weekend. If you
are a Canadian resident, you don't
need a licence to enjoy a fishing
excursion from 12:01 a.m. Friday,
July 7 until 11:59 p.m. Sunday,
July 9. But, you do need to respect
all of Ontario's other fishing rules
and regulations. These rules can be
found in the 1995 Summary of
Sport Fishing Regulations available
from businesses that sell fishing
licences (try bait and tackle shops,
hardware stores and marinas) and
Ministry of Natural Resources
offices. While fishing without a
licence during Family Fishing
Weekend the number of fish you
may keep is set out in the
conservation Licence section of the
summary.
Ontario's family Fishing Week-
end is co-ordinated by a Steering
Committee, a partnership of
government and non-government
groups and individuals including
the Association of Conservation
Authorities of Ontario, Ontario
Federation of Anglers and Hunters
and the Ontario Ministry of Natural
Resources.

of unwanted births.
Despite the dedicated efforts of
concerned individuals and humane
organizations, the fact is, many
people are still breeding cats and
dogs while lOs of thousands of
unwanted animals languish in
animal shelters or on the street
without a home.
Increasing numbers of physicians
are now echoing what many of us
have known - and that studies have
confirmed - for years - pets are
good for what ails you. They are
constant companions who provide
us unconditional love and trust.
They share and enrich our lives,
and in return they ask for so little.
The Humane Society of Canada
(HSC) is proud to announce the
launch of a five year national
campaign called "Everyone's Best
Friends." Through a creative and
engaging multifaceted campaign
we will be asking children and
adults in every community across
Canada to work with us in
partnership to make this a world
where all dogs and cats have a
chance to be loving, lifelong
companions.
If you knew your best friend was
in trouble, wouldn't you want to
help? Spaying or neutering your pet
is the first step in helping your best
friend - because a life is a terrible
thing to waste.

Health Canada released June 28
the results of a study on the levels
of nicotine in cigarette tobacco and
in tobacco smoke. The study,
which was conducted under the
research component of the Tobacco
Demand Reduction Strategy
(TDRS), analyzed seven represen-
tative brands of Canadian cigarettes
that were sold between 1968 and
1995.
Four key findings emerged from
the study. Over the 27-year period:
• the level of nicotine in tobacco
used in cigarettes has increased by
53 per cent;
• the average amount of tobacco
used in each cigarette has
decreased by 14 per cent;
• the level of nicotine in tobacco
smoke fluctuated significantly at
several points during the study
period; current levels represent a
decrease of 20 per cent; and
• the amount of tar in cigarette
tobacco smoke has decreased by 29
per cent.
Since the various parts of the
tobacco plant contain different
levels of nicotine, the selection and
blending of these parts can affect
the nicotine content of the tobacco.
Nicotine and tar levels in cigarette
smoke also depend on factors such
as filter material, ventilation and
paper used.
Health Minister Diane Marleau
characterized the •study as an
important addition to the growing
body of knowledge regarding
tobacco product ingredients and the
manufacturing process. She said:
"the more we know about this
product and the industry, the better
we can effectively control and
eventually minimize tobacco use in
Canada."
Labstat Incorporated, which
carried out the study, has been
active in the field of'research on the
composition of tobacco and
tobacco products for more than 25
years. Labstat will be conducting
three additional studies this year on
the levels of pesticide residues,
toxic chemicals and heavy metals
in cigarettes and in cigarette smoke.
