Brussels PS news Students chant good news The Brussels, Morris and Grey Diabetic project enjoyed a supper held in the United Church, Brussels on June 22. Meal plans and menus had been circulated to members and friends in May so individual diets could be accommodated for the 37 attendees. The meal, consisting of sweet and sour meatballs or chicken breasts, oven roasted potatoes, green beans, cabbage salad, jellied orange salad, dinner rolls and fruit was planned, prepared, served and cleaned up by volunteers Lynn Logue, Dianne Fetter, Betty Robson, Freda Crawford, Alma Watson, Cathy Nichol, Lois McCutcheon and Spence Scott. Donald Dunbar favoured all with piano selections during social time. Sheryl Forrest, B.A. Sc, R.D., the guest speaker, was introduced by Marguerite Thomas, Public Health Nurse. Sheryl spoke on eating out and keeping blood sugar levels balanced. She said that while inadequate food management would affect blood sugar levels, stress can be a factor too. She spoke on exercise, medication (either pills or insulin) and food and its influence on a diabetic's blood sugar. Using an overhead projector she listed what occurs when blood sugar rises or falls extremely. Sheryl gave many tips on eating out, such as: know your meal plan; be familiar with portion size and plan ahead by saving proteins and fat choices for when you plan to eat out. Blood sugar rises after eating starch, milk and fruits and vegetable's, while fats and proteins do not affect blood sugar. When eating at restaurants, ask about food content. If a meal is being served late, a diabetic on medication has to make adjustments to his/her meal plan. One could eat their bedtime snack early or eat some carbohydrate to tide them over. Sheryl used several local restaurant menus as guides allowing for questions as she worked out a dinner meal. Ideally for diabetics, pot luck meals should be labelled as to content; e.g., fat, carbohydrates, proteins and exchanges. As this generally does not occur, a diabetic must make careful informed choices when eating pot luck. Nelva Scott, co-ordinator, thanked Sheryl for her guidance and expertise in planning an evening meal. Sheryl spent some time showing individual members how to calculate meal plans into grams of protein, fat and carbohydrates. Marguerite asked for interest in having an afternoon meeting in the summer. Members will be called when those plans are finalized. The meeting adjourned with the wish for everyone to have a safe summer and notice of our next regular evening meeting on Sept. 17. Lodge news The regular meeting of Morning Star Rebekah Lodge, Brussels took place on June 27 with Noble Grand Jane Hall presiding. This is the last meeting until September. There will be a pot luck supper prior to the next meeting Sept. 12. Past Noble Grand Lois McCutcheon gave reports on the Assembly Sessions and a report of the District meeting held on June 26.
