Teams play two-pitch
By Leisa McCall
The grade eight students were
completely psyched for the Toronto
trip which was planned for June 15
and June 16. As the date rolled
around we couldn't sit still. Thirty-
one out of 35 students went with
three chaperones - Mrs. Baillie,
Mrs. Lichty, Mrs. McLellan and
our teacher, Mr. Colquhoun.
On June 15 we left the school at
7 a.m. We had a two hour bus ride
ahead of us and we made it to the
Planetarium on time thanks to our
driver Mr. Evans.
At the Planetarium we saw a
show in "Extraterrestrial Life"
meaning "Is there life on other
planets?" Different pictures
explained whether or not there
could even be life on the other
planets. Some planets are too cold
and others are too hot.
After the Planetarium we headed
to a beautiful park and had lunch.
Right after lunch we walked a
couple of blocks to the Parliament
Buildings. We visited Lyn
McLeod's old office and Bob Rae's,
soon to be Mike Harris's.
Most of the building is composed
of wood except for the one section
which burnt down and was rebuilt
with marble. One of the pillars in
the building has fossils on it.
We checked out the House of
Commons as well and were
informed of the many important
details.
Next on our list was to visit the
Royal Ontario Museum which is
connected to the Planetarium so we
just walked back there. There we
were able to have a guided tour.
Our tour guide used to be an
archeologist so she had a lot to say
about bones, the dinosaurs and
insects.
One interesting place was where
there was a porch that you walked
out onto and saw real stuffed
ducks, birds and little groundhogs
in a swampy area making real
wilderness sounds.
Casa Loma is a castle with many
different aspects. There were trails
through little bushes, flower
gardens, towers, and refinished
rooms.
The maid's room wasn't too
shabby either. But compared to the
other rooms it sure was. There were
unique washrooms with little
shower heads coming out from all
directions.
The SkyDome was great too.
First off we watched a film on the
making of the Skydome.
Unfortunately we missed a game
but we were fortunate enough to
get a tour.
Our tour guide let us sit in the
baseball commentator's box. We
couldn't go onto the field because
there was going to be a graduation
later on.
Our tour guide told us how the
seats could move and form a square
shaped room for football, figure
skating, basketball, soccer, concerts
and graduations.
One thing I'm sure many people
didn't know was that the pitcher's
mound floats on water! Also the
fake grass is fastened by eight
miles of zipper!
The CN Tower was the next stop
for us. And whoa! Is it ever high!
We walked on the glass floor too.
You could see right down to the
ground and the Toronto Raptor's
new home.
From 7:30 p.m. until 10 p.m. we
walked around Ontario Place. After
Ontario Place we headed to the
Central High School of Commerce
to spend the night.
In the morning we went to the
Science Centre. From the Science
Centre on we went to Paramount
Canada's Wonderland where we
spent the day on roller coasters and
in the water park. Half, the class
would probably say that Canada's
Wonderland was the best part of
the trip.
By Mike Cooper
and Krissy Dilworth
The end is near. We are all
feeling the summer time heat.
The Grade 8 boys and girls
competed in a two-pitch tourna-
ment at Turnberry Central School
on June 23. The coaches of the
teams were Mr. Hooftman and Mrs.
Perrie. Here is a list of the young
men and women who competed:
Mike Cooper, Philip Graber, Ron
McLellan, Kevin Mutter, Terry
Nichol, Matt Snyder, Trevor
Wilson, Jon Wolstenholme, Tony
Carroll, Jason Armstrong, Nathan
Garland, Pat Gilkes, Krissy
Dilworth, Stephanie Patch, Sarah
Exel, Tracy Goodland, Ashley
Gropp, Katie Harrison, Amanda
Leger, Amy McDougall, Jenny
McKercher, Mandy Sellers and
Christa Smith.
On June 16 the kindergarten class
went to Grey Central School for a
picnic with their penpals. They had
a scavenger hunt and a wilderness
hike through the Grey Public
School bush.
Amanda Van Beek has been
taking pictures for the Parents
Association. She has been taking
these pictures because the Parent
Association wants to put up a
display of the activities they have
supported.
On June 19 some band awards
were given to the Grade 7/8
classes. To get one of these awards
you had to participate in two or
more band performances.
Mrs. Thomas has been coming in
to talk to Grade 5/6 about changing
and growing up. The kindergarten
class has been talking about skin
care in the sun. Grades 1-3 has
been talking about cleanliness. We
would like to thank her for taking
the time to talk to us about these
health issues.
As you may know the Grade 8
class is graduating from Brussels
Public School to the bigger F. E.
Madill School next year. We wish
the class the best of luck at
Graduation.
The Grade 8 class would also
like to thank Ann McKercher, Julie
Harrison, Marion Sellers and Mary
Jane Leger for all of the work they
did to get us prepared for the
graduation we all appreciate it.
