Following the dinner awards were presented to several students for educational achievements. The Brussels Lions Citizenship Awards were presented by Lions Club member and BPS teacher Jim Prior and Lions President John Harrison to Philip Graber and Katie Harrison. Philip was also the Grade 7 stu- dents choice for the annual Good Guy Award, which was presented by Sarah Seeds. The Glenn Smith ABCD Award is presented to a student who has contributed to school life over the years above and beyond the call of duty. Teacher Dale Wanless pre- sented it to Katie Harrison. Katie also received the Margery Huether Music Award, which was presented by Mrs. Huether and BPS music teacher Joan Perrie. Mrs. Perrie and Parents' Associa- tion representatvie Julie Harrison presented the Association's Geogra- phy Award to Jenny McKercher. Jenny also received the Brussels Optimist Science Award, which was presented by BPS Science teacher Dale Wanless and Optimist Greg Wilson. Ashley Gropp was this year's recipient of the BPS French Award, Brussels People Bill and Sandra Clark have recently returned from a six week visit in England during which they toured, by motorcycle, from Guernsey (Channel Islands) to Carlisle which is near the Scottish border resulting in a total distance of about 2,000 miles each. They visited family members, many friends made through membership in the International Motorcyclists Touring Club, researched some family history and participated in a couple of club events. One of the memorable events of the tour was the crossing to Guernsey on the high speed catamaran, ScaCat, which carries vehicles and about 500 people. The crossing was on the day the French ferry captain took the short cut into Jersey and ran his ferry, a smaller catamaran, firmly aground on a rock. The SeaCat went to help as the large slower ferry was too large to get close enough. They finally departed Weymouth at 6 p.m. and soon encountered gale force winds and high seas. While Bill snoozed in the cabin, Sandra backed herself into a corner of the railing and was clinging firmly to it outside in the wind and spray, as the tossing catamaran (they're built 10% off Parts & Labour to flex), confining cabin, warm air and MANY ill people were having a definitely negative effect. The weather ranged from snow in Guernsey (a rare event) to very warm in the lake district (also an infrequent occasion) but it worked out that they only had to ride in really bad weather one day (2 degrees Celsius and gusting rain). The countryside was very green and the scent of flowers was everywhere. Sandra, a creator of collector bears, was lucky enough to spend time with two well-known teddy bear artists to learn how to design her own bear patterns so she no longer has to rely on modified purchased patterns. Of course, many teddy bear shops were visited and two lovely British teddy bears just couldn't be left behind. Some 27 people were on hand at the Golden Lantern Restaurant, Sunday, June 18, to celebrate with, Margaret Sweeney of Huronlea on the occasion of her 84th birthday. Following dinner the gathering moved to the home of Margaret's brother, Jim Smith where a social time was enjoyed. Guests, representing all branches of her family, attended from Hamil- ton, London, Belgrave and Bruce- field. A good time was had by all. Mary Lowe and Ethel Brewer accompanied the residents of Huronview and Huronlea to Hamilton Place on Wednesday, June 14 where all enjoyed the spring rendition of the Geritol Continued on page 6 presented to her by teacher Rudy Hooftman. A former student at BPS, Cory Bragg was on hand to present the first Cory Bragg Athletic Award to Sarah Excl and Jason Boivin. Also making the presentation was teach- er Bill Teall. Sarah was the recipient of the Ken Ashton Mathematics Award, presented by teacher Karen Uhler and trustee Don McDonald and the Royal Canadian Legion Proficiency Award.
