Blyth PeeWee soccer
starts with 4-0 win
The Blyth PeeWee soccer season
got underway in Clinton on May
17. The Blyth squad played a very
strong game coming up with a 4-0
victory. Goal scorers were Jeff
Cowan on a corner kick, Mike
Ansley with two and John Eric
Pardys with one.
Assists went to Mike Courtney,
Jeff Cowan, two, Johnathan
Kochis, Dan Haak, Kelly Boven,
April Van Amersfoort, two.
On May 24 Blyth travelled to
Wingham and again played a very
solid game with a 12-0 win. Goals
were scored by Courtney three,
Pardys three, Jeff one, Kelly one,
Ansley one, Dan Egli three. Assists
went to Pardys two, Darryl Gerrits
three, Ansley three, Egli two, Van
Amersfoort two, Boven two,
Cowan four, Kochis one, Hakkers
one.
Goderich Canadian Tire came to
Belgrave for Blyth's first home
game. This game was very evenly
matched with great scoring chances
at both ends, but Blyth came up
short with a 2-1 loss.
Ansley put Blyth's lone goal in
single handedly.
Lucknow hosted the Blyth Squad
on June 7. With five under aged
players Blyth could not penetrate
the strong Lucknow team and
handed them a 5-1 victory. Van
Amersfoort put in a long shot from
the corner with Pardys and
Courtney setting her up.
Blyth hosted the Goderich
Knights of Columbus on June 14.
With both teams taking to the field
it proved to be a very close match.
With Ansley and Van Amersfoort
maneuvering the ball in tight
quarters, they set up Gerrits who
took a hard 25 yard kick to put
Blyth up by one goal.
This was a short-lived lead as
Goderich came back with two
goals.
With a few words of
encouragement at half time Blyth
came out very strong as they took
away a number of scoring chances.
Cowan placed a beautiful 40 yard
kick, putting it just under the
crossbar to tie the game at two all.
Gerrits made a nice pass up the side.
line to Van Amersfoort, who in
turn made a nice cross over to
Pardys who headed the ball
between the pipes.
With the pressure on, Blyth was
rewarded with a corner kick which
Cowan placed perfectly in front of
the net for Van Amersfoort to head
it in giving Blyth the 4-2 win.
This was a very well played
game and a rewarding win. Good
stuff team.
The next game is June 21 in
Belgrave against Clinton. Come out

The last frontier
Get the government to
help pay for your pension
By Linda Henhoeffer

My husband is furious! Ron has paid into the Canada Pension Plan
since its inception in 1966. Now, federal bureaucrats are concerned the
Canada Pension Plan will be bankrupt about the same time Ron plans to
retire.
These same government officials are warning us 'baby boomers' to save
money for our retirement income and not to rely so much on government
pension cheques.
But, saving money is very difficult for most of us because of all the
taxes we pay to the many levels of government. StatsCan just released
statistics that conclude after-tax family income has FALLEN 6.5 per cent
since 1989. In fact, today's family income is at the same level as at the
end of the recession of the early 1980s.
What can the ordinary taxpayer do to build their retirement savings and
reduce income taxes? Is it possible to get the government to help you to
fund your retirement plan?
Consider the 'Wealth Builder' program. This program starts by
borrowing money from a bank or trust company. This money is invested
in a portfolio of mutual funds. There are two main advantages to
investing in this way rather than making monthly deposits to a mutual
fund account. First, the interest paid on the bank loan is an income tax
deduction. Second, the investor with a lump sum has a larger pool of
money growing and compounding. For example, a $20,000 investment
loan costs approximately $175 a month to service the loan at 8.5 per cent
interest. It would take an investor contributing $175 a month almost 10
years to accumulate $20,000 of principal.
To make this program even more tax effective, another income tax
deduction is added by skimming the 'profits' off the original mutual fund
portfolio every February. Putting this 'profit' into an RRSP portfolio of
mutual funds gives you a second income tax deduction.
To make it easier to pay the monthly payments on the bank loan, you
can have your company payroll staff deduct less income tax off each pay
cheque, instead of receiving your income tax refund as a lump sum in
April of each year. Now your pay cheques are larger and the extra dollars
can be used to make the monthly loan payments! This gets your money
working harder for you, rather than giving it interest free for months to
the government. For the example above, the $175 monthly payment costs
only $51 out of the family budget after calculating your tax refunds. (This
is calculated on your being in the 42 per cent tax bracket.)
In order to have less income tax deducted from your pay cheque, a
special form called a 'Reduction at Source' has to be filled out each
December and sent to Revenue Canada for their approval. Revenue
Canada reviews your investment program and gives your payroll staff
permission to reduce your income tax on each pay cheque.
The bank loan is amortized over 20 years because the plan is to pay the
principal off as slowly as possible, to take advantage of the income tax
deduction of the interest on the loan. This is difficult for most of us to
understand as we have all been taught to pay off debt as quickly as
possible. This certainly is good advice when referring to our mortgage on
our horhe. But, remember the interest paid on our mortgage is NOT an
income tax deduction!
With all governments cutting back on services and programs, we must
start relying more on ourselves. With the 'Wealth Builder' program, we
can set up our very own pension plan ... and have the government help us
pay for it!
