On the attack
This batter may not be as big as Joe Carter, but she takes
a mighty swing at the pitch nonetheless. The game in
Brussels was between the well-matched Belmore and
host Pre-Mite teams, who challenged each other to an 11-
11 tie.

In the first of two games for the
week, the Brussels Pre-Mites II
stepped onto the diamond in Bel-
grave to take on the hometown
team, on June 13.
Brussels took the lead in their
first at bat, bringing six across the
plate. Runs were scored by Alyssa
Ruttan, Nicky Mason, Tyler Jutzi,
Cory Chapman, Chris Corbett and
Justin Thompson.
By the end of the inning, Bel-
grave had come back to within one,
then were able to hold the visitors
scoreless in the second, giving the
home team the opportunity to take
the lead for the first time.
Again scoring five runs in the
second, Belgrave jumped to a 10 to
six lead.
The seesaw battle continued
when the Brussels bats returned in
the third, doubling their tally to 12.
Heading home were Mason,
Jutzi, Chapman, Corbett, Thomp-
son and Tonuny Cronin.
However, the Belgrave team was
not to be defeated. The addition of
five runs brought the score to 15-12
before Brussels had their final at-
bats.

the second, with runs scored by
Jamie McCallum (two), Jeremy
Campbell, Rob Burkholder, Luke
Lockridge and Rob Ireland.
St. Pauls held the squad through
the third while bringing in three of
their own, to jump ahead by one.
Belgrave, not to be held down,
retaliated with eight in the fourth
while St. Paul could only muster

Ethel
On Monday evening, the
Brussels PeeWee boys played their
first home game of the season
against a novice Ethel team.
The strong Brussels offence put
the game out of reach early,
sending 12 runs across the plate in
the first inning. Runs were scored
by Patrick Gilkes two, Tyler Bragg
two, Nathan Garland, Jason
Armstrong, Terry Nichol, Chris
Mason, Joel Kellington, Mark
Kroll, Joshua Gropp and Justin
Ruttan.
Seven more runs were added in
the second with Gilkes, Nichol,
Mason, Kellington, Kroll, Gropp
and Ruttan coming home. Four
more came in the third, by Garland,
Nichol, Mason and Kellington.
Garland and Gropp shared the
duties on the mound, combining for
nine strikeouts and seven walks in
the 23-0 win.
The boys play three games next
week. Two of these are home
games, against Wingham on
Monday and Belgrave on Tuesday.
Game time is 6:15.
Tigers win
The Brussels Tigers won two of
three games played and hold a six
win - two loss record in Huron
County Fastball League action.
Monday night the visiting Lieury
Jets went home with a 10-1 win.
The Tigers were held to three base
runners, including a lead off home
run by Doug Conley in the second.
Wednesday in Seaforth the
Tigers broke open a 1-1 tie with
eight fifth inning runs for a 9-1 win
over Coops Sports. Murray Pipe
led the way with a grand slam
while Tim Fritz, Gary Pipe and
Greg Fritz all batted three for three.
Conley allowed only three
runners to reach base for the win
while Todd Uhrig struck out ante
of four batters faced in relief.
Sunday night the Tigers scored a
run in each of their first three at
bats, then added four in the fifth for
a 7-1 win over the Walton Brewers.
Uhrig faced six batters over the
limit, striking out 11. Doug Shaw
had a three RBI game, while
batting two for three, as did Pete
Exel, Ken Higgins and Uhrig.
Bob Steiss went the distance for
Walton with Steve Knight and John
Huether reaching base on two of
three tries.
The Tigers travel to Lieury
tonight, then meet the Mitchell
Mets at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in the
annual Seaforth Fastball
Tournament.
Gowanstown was not prepared
for the onslaught orchestrated by
the Brussels Squirts when they vis-
ited June 6.
The contest started slowly, with a
scoreless game at the end of the
first inning.
Gowanstown struck first, putting
a single on the board, but by their
second turn at bat, the Brussels'
squad had shifted into high gear.
Runs scored by Matt McCall,
Andrew Garland, Robbie McK-
ercher, Stephen Todd, Chris Coul-
ter, Robbie Kerr and Matt Kroll
boosted the hometowners to a 7-1
lead.
Holding their opponents score-
less for the third and fourth, Brus-
sels tacked on another seven runs in
each frame.
Markers were posted by Mike
Walker (two), Brian Oldfield (two),
Philip Leger (two), Andy Van Beek
(two), Garland, McKercher, Todd,
Kerr, Kroll, Jimmy Franken,
Matt McCall put in a brilliant
performance as pitcher, striking out
13 through five innings and allow-
ing only one hit.
The final score was 21-2.
Walton, in town on June 13, was
confronted by a very tough team.
The visitors took the early lead,
racking up three runs in the first,
but the strong arm of McCall would
once again stifle the bats of the
opponents.
Brussels started their comeback
in the bottom of the second, with
two runs before adding a total of
eight iri the third.
Walton managed only one more
run off McCall, bringing the tally
to 10-4 for Brussels.
Once again, McCall struck out
13.
Scores were recorded by McCall
(two), Leger (two), Kerr, Kroll,
Coulter, McKercher, Todd and
Tim Harrison.

Brussels Squirts were handed their
first defeat of the season when they
travelled to Wingham on June 15.
Brussels took the early lead,
pushing one across the plate in the
first and adding four in the third.
With the score sitting at 5-1 after
four, Wingham found their groove,
belting six runs in the top of the
fifth.
Brussels was able to regain the
lead with four in the sixth, but
could not hold on as Wingham
brought in the winner in the bot-
tom of the frame.
The final totals were 10-9 for
Wingham.
Adding to their season stats in
runs scored were: Kerr, Walker
(two), Harrison, Kroll, Franken,
Garland, Oldfield and Todd.
The Squirts' record now stands at
six wins and one loss.
The four runs scored by Ruttan,
Jutzi, Chapman and Corbett were
not enough to hold off the home-
town squad as the one run lead
quickly fell to a five-run attack.
The final tally was Belgrave 20,
Brussels 16.
Corbett belted one homer for the
visiting team.
The following day, Bluevale
came to town.
Very evenly matched, the two
teams started out slowly, with the
score standing at 3-3 at the bottom
of the second.
After Bluevale upped their total
to five in the next half inning, Brus-
sels exploded with seven runs. The
numbers were put up by Thomp-
son, Chapman, Tyler Jutzi, Ruttan,
Christopher Jutzi, Mike Keffer and
Adam Corbett.
Unable to hold their five-run
lead, Brussels allowed six Bluevale
runs in the fourth.
Down just one in the bottom of
the final inning, Brussels only man-
aged to tie the game at 11.
Other runs were scored by Rut-
tan, Mason, Tyler Jutzi and Chap-
man.
