Going the distance
Mr. John Talbot's Grade 7/8 class travelled over 390 kilometres for the Huron Hustle during
the month of May. They received special recognition for their efforts during this
Participaction activity sponsored by the Health Unit. Huron Landscaping donated a crabtree
to the class which has been planted in front of the school. Digging are team captains, Kevin
Trewartha and Pam Schneider. Standing next to Mr.-Talbot in the back row, at left is the
school's Public Health Nurse Josee Charlebois.
Students do the Huron Hustle
Twenty-eight classes of eager,
energetic students from 11 Huron
County schools took part in the
"Huron Hustle" during the month
of May.
The "Huron Hustle" is a physical
activity promotion program that
encourages students to be active
every day. The program was
offered by the Huron County
Health Unit in co-operation with
the elementary schools.

students earned one kilometre for

development, we insist that Huron
Council reconsider alternatives to
landfilling which are unsafe for the
public within miles of the site.
Ybur hesitation, which may have
been justified at the time holds little
water now.
If you say that you are against
incineration, it would be hypocrisy
seeing that although it is
environmentally harmful, you
allow burning of waste at township
dumps. If you are against
incineration because you feel that it
is too expensive, we challenge you
to bring forth your updated reports
on incineration costs?
We completely agree with Huron
County Councillor Mason Bailey
who said "I don't think we should
be looking for landfill sites
anymore. The world is developing
better methods of waste
management, and they are very
good methods." A landfill site is a
landfill site, big or small, poison
will get into the water and that is
not going to go away.
Your own documents state that
some leachate will get into the
groundwater. Moreover your
proposed A3 dump will replace
many smaller dumps. This is in
direct conflict with up-to-date
knowledge in waste management.
At a seminar, a Committee member
was told that it was safer to have
several small dumps than one large
dump, due to the higher
concentrations of chemicals at one
site.
A few facts about municipal solid
waste (MSW) dumps. Referring to
a report entitled "Toxic Substances
Emitted by MSW Landfills"; in its
introduction it states the following.
"This report reviews available data
on toxic substances present in
MSW landfill leachate and gas.
These substances, many of which
are carcinogens (cancer forming),
activity they did at home, at school,
or in the community. Each week,
the average of the students'
accumulated kilometres was
recorded around the perimeter of a
large map of Huron County.
A certificate was presented to
each participating class at the
completion of the program. Two
classes have been recognized for
the long distances that they have
travelled. One of these classes is
Mr. Talbot's grade 7/8 class at
Hullett Central Public School. They
are being presented a flowering
are emitted into the air, surface
water and groundwater and thus
present serious environmental and
public health threats."
The report lists 53 toxic
compounds and metal found in the
dumps studied. Ninety per cent of
the dumps contained benzene and
vinylchloride which are so toxic
that they are banned from
municipal landfills.
With regard to the environment;
methane which is emitted from
dumps is a greenhouse gas and is a
contributor to the greenhouse
effect. In "a landfill without
methane energy recovery generates
12 times more greenhouse gas than
MSW combusted in a modern
waste-to-energy (incinerator)
facility. Even with the hopeful
estimates for methane energy
recovery, waste-to-energy is six
times more desirable than
landfilling". Likewise toxic
substances are destroyed by the
process of incineration.
Europe and also Canada have the
technology to dispose of waste
permanently and safely. We do not
have to re-invent the wheel.
In conclusions, dumps are
hazardous to the public safety
which contravenes the obligation of
responsibility municipalities have
toward their constituents.
Furthermore, this is no longer
simply an issue of building a dump,
but one of in whose hands we
entrust our environment? Surely
not into the hands of those who
recklessly disregard or are ignorant
of safer waste disposal technology?
We perhaps cannot do anything
about how the environment is
mishandled half way around the
earth, but to mishandle our
environment here, with effects that
will affect adversely three or more
generations, is immoral.
Sincerely,
Rob McQueen.
