When it was first announced that Tom Cruise had been awarded the role
of Lastat in the film version of Anne Rice's best selling novel Interview
With a Vampire ***1/2 (Warner) no one seemed happy, least of all Rice
herself. When people actually saw the movie in theatres last fall I don't
think I remember too much carping from anyone and now that it's on
home video if you like your horror stories with a slightly homo-erotic
twist, then this is the film for you. Directed with great style and eerie
mood by Neil Jordan (The Crying Game) the cast, in addition to Cruise
features Brad Pitt, Antonio Banderas, Stephen Rae, Kirsten Dunst and
Christian Slater who are uniformly excellent. (Rated R)
If you have a taste for foreign films then The Blue Kite ****
(Kino/CHV), a powerful new drama from China is well worth searching
out. Director Tian Zhuangzhuang made the film "without government
permission" and consequently found it banned in his home country. Told
from the perspective of a young boy, it traces the fate of a Beijing family
and their neighbours as they experience the political and social upheavals
in 1950s and 60s China. Even though the boy's parents, a librarian and
school teacher, are both loyal communist party members they soon learn
that even the most innocent criticisms can be interpreted by the party as
imperialist propaganda. The Blue Kite is great filmmaking and highly
recommended. (Not Rated - English subtitles)
Among the week's other new and unpreviewed releases is Junior
(MCA/Universal), an alleged comedy which stars Arnold Schwarzenegger
as a pregnant man. Also in the cast are Danny DeVito and Emtna
Thompson. (Rated PG-13)
In Attack of the 60 Foot Centrefold (C/FP), a young woman who will
stop at nothing to become a famous magazine's Centrefold of the year
undergoes a secret beauty treatment and finds herself filling out in most
unusual ways. (Rated R)
For those of you who missed the recent television showing of 500
Nations (Warner) this eight-part series is now available on video. Hosted
and Executive produced by Kevin Costner the programs tell the story of
North America's original inhabitants. (Not Rated)
Starting soon we will be using the new Motion Picture Distribution
Rating rating system for tapes and laserdiscs. The ratings officially went
into use on May 1, and should be included on all releases after that date.
All retailers were sent in-store posters describing the rating stickers and
what they mean so you the customer can make informed choices as to a
film's content.
