THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 14, 1995. Businesspeople meet discuss promotions The initial planning is underway though those organizing events for Brussels homecoming are still looking for ideas and volunteers. The next meeting of the commit- tee is set for June 21, at 7:30 at the Ark and member Donna White says new people with new directions are always welcome. It is hoped the position of chair will be filled by June 21 with the two vice-chairs posts filled and 10 subgroups organized soon, says White. With the parade committee already set, bands considered and the possibility of a theme talked over, the group thought more ideas might include things such as family events for young and old, activities at the dam, food for thought, a school reunion and methods to pre- sell tickets yet leave plenty of room for the casual visitor. Letters will be sent to all local organizations and clubs asking for volunteers to sit on the various committees, which will meet next in October or November. Anyone with some great ideas or interested in becoming involved as a volunteer is welcome to gather at the Ark and help plan Brussels' Homecoming. It wasn't much fun for drivers, but members of the Brussels busi- ness community agreed the June 3 community yard sale was definitely a success. At a luncheon meeting last Thursday, businesspeople dis- cussed the event and planned for future promotions. Noting that business was boom- ing the day of the sale, which co- incided with an annual slowpitch tournament as well, local restauran- ter John Harrison said, "I don't know what we would have done had the sun been shining." Other people remarked on the traffic congestion in the downtown core and a suggestion was made that perhaps next year the down- town core could be blocked off so the businesses would be able to get more involved through sidewalk sales or other planned activities. The group are planning ahead to promote the village during the upcoming moto-cross races in August. Also, an idea from Keith Mulvey regarding a village Christ- mas promotion stirred quite a bit of enthusiasm from those present, who agreed to meet in two weeks to discuss it further. Sorry, our mistake! Deputy Fire Chief Don Crawford was incorrectly identified in the Brussels Fire Department com- memorative issue. We apologize for the error. The next meeting of the Brussels businesspeople is at 7 a.m., Wednesday, June 28 at The Golden Lantern. Any businesspeople who are interested are invited to attend. WI salutes grandmothers The Majestic Women's Institute held its grandmother's meeting on June 7 with 18 ladies present. President Ruth Sauvd opened the meeting with a reading on a wonderful grandma and "What Will We Do With Grandma?" Roll call was answered by telling where the women's grandmothers were born and showing an article they treasure. Tickets were given to the members for a quilt draw in September. Ruth Sauvd is to be the delegate for the area convention on Oct. 3 and 4 at Arthur. A hiker tour is being held on Oct. Brussels People Laurin Hoegy, daughter of Rhon- da and Merle, and Ashley Gropp, daughter of Mark and Bonnie, com- pleted a year of classes with Perfor- mance One Dance Studio in Listowel at the annual recital on Saturday evening. The theme of this year's perfor- mance was Disney. Wednesday, June 21 at The Ark 7:30 p.m. Everyone Weicome Please bring your Ideas 15 in Huron County. Melody White made a motion to sponsor a contestant for fair queen. Lunch committee is made up of Doris McCall, Edna Pletch and Leona Armstrong for the trip to Grand Bend on Sept. 1 to see My Fair Lady at the Huron Country Playhouse. Ruby Steiss had the grandmothers laughing at her "Smiles". Convenor Doris McCall gave a reading on "Grandmothers". She also asked members to complete their pedigree chart, autobiography and a writeup on homes where they have lived. A Grandmother's Bingo was conducted by Kathy Bridge. Numerous prizes were won by the grandmothers. The scrapbook will be done by Kathy Bridge until the September meeting. Happy birthday was sung to the members before closing the meeting.
