THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 7, 1995. PAGE 35.
On May 18 rehearsals began for
Ballad for a Rum Runner's
Daughter. The world premiere on
Friday, June 16, will officially
begin the celebration of Blyth
Festival's 21st season!
Written by Laurie Fyffe, with
music composed and arranged by
Beth Bartley, this is a passionate
tale of love, ambition and betrayal
set along Nova Scotia's south
shore, during 1932 and 1982. The
fabulous live eclectic music ranges
from toe-stomping fiddles to
ballads and love songs.
Directed by Janet Amos,
costumes are designed by Debra
Hanson, with set and lighting
design by Stephan Droege.
The stellar cast features Ted
Atherton as Thomas Stark, Jerry
Franken as Jack Tanner, Angela
Fusco as Granuaile/Melba/Pearl,
Daniel Giverin as Hirum/RCMP
Officer, Michael Healey as Willis,
Randi Helmers as Vivian, and Trish
O'Reilly as Clare.
Cathy Nosaty is the musical
director, as well as a featured
musician in the show. Other
musicians include Beth Bartley,
Mark Clifford and Daniel Giverin.
Ballad for a Rum Runner's
Daughter was commissioned by -
the Blyth Festival with the
assistance of the Ontario Arts
Council and the Roulston Roy New
Play Development Programme and
is generously sponsored by
Westcast Industries and CKNX•
TV.
Monday, May 29, marked the
first day of rehearsal for The
Tomorrow Box, returning as a
Blyth favourite, which sold out in
1981. The play involves two
marriages in an Ontario farming
family and centres around Maureen
- who after 40 years of putting her
husband and children first, stands
up for herself as she discovers the
family farm has been sold without
her consent.
Anne Chislett wrote this play "to
sing the praises of the farm wives
whose abilities and contributions
to the life of the community
deserved a play entirely their own."
It opens Wednesday, June 21.
Kate Trotter makes her debut as
director, with set and costumes
designed by Debra Hanson and
lighting designed by Michael
Kruse. The outstanding acting
ensemble presents Anne Anglin as
Maureen Cooper, Harry Booker as
Jack Cooper, Eric Coates as Joe
Cooper, Deborah Drakeford as Lisa

at the Exeter High School to learn
about explosions and what happens
when an explosion occurs. There
was also a laser display.
We interviewed T.J. Sauerbrei
and Andrew Garland. They
explained the activities. One
display, called "Fire and Ice" had a
balloon filled with helium so when
a match was lit and held under it,
the balloon caught fire and
exploded.
In another display there was a
can with a lid which had holes in
the top. There was a gas in the can.
The gas started humming and the
noise crescendoed until it exploded.
The best experiment was the
laser display. A person who tries
this experiment, has to try to get
past a laser security system by
dodging the lasers.
