The Citizen, 1995-06-07, Page 34Forthcoming Marriage Mr. & Mrs. Keith Nicholson and Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Baxter are pleased to announce the forthcoming marriage of their children Cheryl and Steve Saturday, June 10, 1995 4:00 p.m. Bluevale United Church Open Reception at 9:30 p.m. BMG Community Centre Brussels MO X: By John Schedler Leading off this week's new releases is Disclosure **** (Warner), an excellent drama of corporate intrigue starring Michael Douglas and Demi Moore. The plot follows an executive at a high tech computer firm, who is passed over for a promotion, only to discover that his new boss is a sexually aggressive woman with whom he had an affair 10 years before. This is a riveting, fast paced thriller based on the best-selling novel by Michael Crichton and directed by Barry Levinson. Highly recommended. (Rated R - definitely not for children). Ready to Wear *** (Alliance) is another of those ensemble cast things that director Robert Altman (Nashville, The Player, Short Cuts) seems to have now made his life's work. This time he sets his satirical eye on the fashion business in a film that, while enjoyable, is a bit too long. The cast includes Tim Robbins, Julia Roberts, Sophia Loren, Marcello Mastroianni and many more. (Rated PG-13) The Ascent **1/2 (Cabin Fever) is a so-so prisoner of war drama set in Africa during World War II. Vincent Spano plays the Italian soldier trying to escape and Ben Cross is the stiff upper lip British officer determined to stop him. (Rated PC) in the classic movie department are the final three cassettes in Kino's 10 cassette Art of Buster Keaton series. The titles included in these latest releases include The General **** (1927) which is ranked among the best films of all time. This brilliant Civil War comedy features Buster as a Southern engineer who wages a one man war against the Union spies who have hijacked his cherished locomotive. "Every shot has the authenticity and unassuming correct composition of a Matthew Brady Civil War photograph", wrote film historian David Robinson. "No one - not even D.W. Griffith or John Huston and certainly not Victor Fleming (Gone With The Wind) - caught the visual aspect of the Civil War as Keaten did." In College ***1/2 (1927) Keaton plays a mild mannered freshman who becomes involved in a war of athletics as he tries to win the heart of beautiful co-ed. Buster Keaton's final independent production before joining MGM (the biggest mistake of his career) is the comic masterpiece Steamboat Bill Jr **** (1928). Set on the Mississippi River the film follows the adventures of a spoiled young man who is forced by his crusty father to learn the ropes of riverboating. This is the film that features the famous hurricane climax and the legendary stunt in which the front of a building collapses over Buster who passed unharmed through an open window. Each cassette also features at least two of Keaton's short subjects like my favourite The Playhouse *"* (1921), an amazing technical tour-de- force in which he plays every character. Strike up the band Students from Brussels Public School were just a few of the young people participating in the mass band performance at Central Huron Secondary School on May 30. Other schools involved in Band-o-rama were Robertson Memorial, Clinton and Holmesville Public Schools. Brussels PS news Band enjoys CHSS visit By Amy McDougall and Ashley Gropp The BPS band participated in Banderama at CHSS in Clinton on Tuesday. There were four other schools involved this year. In the morning, we were separated into sectionals. This means all the trumpets, low brass, clarinets, flutes, and percussion divided into groups. Each group practised the songs they were going to play. Before the morning was over we had also had a practice for the mass band. After lunch we listened to the CHSS band play music from the Lion King as well as some other pieces. Then we got together and played in the mass band. We then played as separate schools. BPS pieces were Westwind Overture and Old MacDonald's Band. We were pleased to attend. We are more aware than ever of the renovations happening around our school. The office has bee moved to where the kindergarten room used to be and so has the staff room. The kindergartens are in the old library. The library has been temporarily moved to the gym, as has the music room. Mrs. Uhler's class is in the old French room and Ms Anonech's class is in what used to be the music room. We would like to thank students for being patient during the renovations. On Thursday, many students participated in the track and field meet at Howick Public School. In the 50 metre race Dianne Cochrane placed first. In the 100 metre event Lesley Pepper placed third. For the 200 metre Drew Thomas finished second and Morgan Bishop placed third. In the 400 metre Joshua Nichol finished third, Jodi Sellers placed first, and Heather Armstrong placed first. In the 800 metre Jenna Krotz finished first and Tyler Bragg placed second. GRADE 6 AND 7 CLASS TRIP By Sabine Schroecker Grade 6 Last Thursday, May 25 at 7 a.m. we started to pile on the bus. There were 52 students and 10 parents. We picked a good day because it was sunny. Most of us were sleepy so early in the morning. Our first stop was at McDonald's for a rest stop. It felt like days until we finally reached Tussaud's Wax Museum at Niagara Falls. At the wax museum they had famous people like Whitney Houston, Arnold Swartzeneger and Elvis Presley made out of wax. At the end of the Wax Museum there was a horror chamber which was really neat. It didn't take too long for us to walk to the falls wher.e. we got to wander off with our friends to look at the falls and buy souvenirs. Next came Marineland. There we watched a dolphin show and a killer whale show. They also had two seals named Thunder and Splash. After the shows we got to go on the rides. They had a roller coaster which was called Dragon Moun- tain. Ross Clark went on it the most times, a total of 21. Then we went to the Welland Canal where we watched a short movie and some of us went into the museum which cost 80 cents. Afterwards we got a choice between eating at Harveys, Swiss Chalet or Subway. When we got home (at 9:30) we were all tired but we had fun. REGIONAL TRACK AND FIELD Blyth Public School was extremely well represented at the regional track and field meet held Continued on page 35
