For all time
Members of Melville Presbyterian Church have come up
with a special idea — a time capsule. As a new elevator is
being installed in the church, it was decided that the
capsule be placed inside the new walls to be found when
the church comes "crumbling down", say church members
Mary Douma, left, and Margaret Mclnroy. The pair enjoy
some smiles over some of the church history set to be
encapsulated.
Many projects underway
at Melville Presbyterian
Melville Church has been a busy
place in the month of May, and
June is shaping up to be the same.
On Christian Family Sunday, the
Sunday School presented the
church with a banner entitled, Let
the Little Children Come Unto Me.
Each of the children's and the
teachers' hand prints is on the
banner as well as their names. It
was pieced and quilted by Debbie
McLellan. Plans are made to hang
the banner in the new west entrance
when completed.
The children also gave each
women present that Sunday a card
with a decorated hand on it and an
appropriate verse inside. The Junior
Choir sang several selections as
well.
After much careful planning the
Wheelchair Access project has
finally begun. Listowel Holdings
are renovating a hallway in the
basement and making the necessary
changes to install a lift leading to
the sanctuary. John Rutledge is the
architect.
Completion date is late June.
Plans are being made for a grand
opening of the project this fall.
The Maytime Supper held on
May 31 was a success. The large
crowd enjoyed the culinary talents
of the Melville ladies.
On Sunday, June 4 the Auburn
Missionary Church had a concert of
praise. John and Judy Schmitt from
Kitchener sang Everybody Praise
the Lord and Expectation. John
accompanied Judy on the piano as
she sang The Lord is My Light.
Then Judy accompanied John as he
sang Be Still and Know.
All of the songs were written by
Judy.
The Unit Trio from Elmira sang
Where Do I Go? and I Will Praise
The first weekend in June found
members at their Family Camping
Weekend at Camp Kintail. Hardy
campers went on Saturday while
others joined them on Sunday
morning for the church service in
the outdoor chapel. A pot luck
lunch followed.
On Sunday, June 11 Miss
Cathrine Campbell will be
preaching for a call. A time to visit
with her informally will be held on
Saturday, June 10 from 2 to 4 p.m.
in the afternoon.
Sunday, June 18 will be
communion and baptism followed
by a joint congregational meeting
with Melville's sister church Knox,
Belgrave to process the call.
Monday, June 19 many of the
children will be back up to Camp
Kintail for a Children's Rally
sponsored by the WMS. Activities
are organized for all the children in
our presbytery.
Sunday, June 25 will be
Promotion Sunday for the Sunday
School. Immediately following the
church service everyone is invited
for a swimming party and barbecue
at the local pool.
For the month of July Melville
will be worshipping with the
Brussels United Church. August
will be their turn for summer
services.
Him. Their next musical numbers
were Holy Spirit Thou Art Welcome
and He is More Wonderful to Me.
Everyone was blessed with this
beautiful music.
Dave Rolston gave testimony of
what the Lord has done for him in
his healing of his heart attack on
May 1.
On Friday, June 2 many attended
the 75th birthday party for Dave
which was held at Bethany
Missionary Church, Kitchener.
By Steve Webb

In the past few months, people
have asked me to read several
books. Some have been recom-
mended simply for the enjoyment
of reading, some because of their
worth to rural ministry, some
because they want an opinion about
their content.
The books that fall into the last
category are the ones that I would
like to leave you some thoughts
about.
The books people often ask my
opinion about are the kind of books
that are becoming more and more
popular in what is being called the
New Age. Some of these books
promise a new enlightenment,
some a more heightened
spirituality.
One of the books speaks about
the power of positive speech
effecting a dramatic change in your
life. All seem to promise the
ultimate answer to what our inner
souls are longing to find and
embrace.
Some make sense, some offer a
promise of reality that is paper thin.
Some speak of truths that seem
oddly familiar, some make no sense
at all.
Some appear to have been
written to explain how we can
change and shape our lives by
following mystical avenues of
thought. Thoughts, which after you
stop and think about them appear to
be plain common sense in disguise.
I wonder sometimes if the
authors of some of these books
really intend people to benefit from
what is written inside or whether
they just want to benefit from the
price attached to the back cover of
their work.
I don't want you to think I
dismiss all the new books coming
out; I just dismiss some of them.
Some really do help one achieve a.
heightened awareness of our
spiritual nature. They help us
understand the truths and the
teachings of the Bible in ways that
we perhaps have not considered
before. They challenge us, in ways
that make us consider and search
for the meaning of scriptures in
more revealing ways. They open
for us the pages of the Bible in a

Mennonite Fellowship, on Sunday,

Pardys were song leader and
pianist. Rob Demaray read the
scripture passage Acts 2:1-11.
Pastor Tom spoke on Pentecost,
naming his message, "Birthday
Celebration".

Christ who once lived with us in
the flesh now lives in us by His
Spirit.

clear and exciting way.
One of the most fascinating
things I have discovered about
some of the books I have been
asked to read is that by considering
the very points of the traditional
teachings of the Bible and the
Christian faith these books ask us
to let go of, they become even more
vital and illuminating. Instead of
destroying the validity of a Biblical
perspective, often times they lift up
something I may have missed.
They do so by making me search
and study the Bible in a deeper
way.
I will not tell you to refrain from
reading this kind of book; I will
leave that to your own judgement.
What I will suggest however is
that you never accept without
question what is written. Ask the
questions that arise in your mind
when you read something new.
Think about what is really being
said. It doesn't take a great deal of
in-depth study; usually you will
know if it sounds right. If it makes
reference to a Biblical truth or
insight, check it out for yourself. If
it doesn't make any Biblical
reference, check it out for yourself.
The long and the short of it is - If
a book promises you a heightened
spiritual awareness, a better life, a
new insight into the presence and
glory of God, make sure that your
Bible is open beside it.
Rely on the book that was written
to help us experience God.
