FUN AND GAMES
Fighting fires wasn't the only time members of the Brussels Fire Department got together.
Water barrel fights have proven to be a favourite event for participants and a lot of fun for
the public to watch as well.
HEATING THINGS UP
A regular site at the funfests in Brussels, the firemen were always on hand to cook up a hot
and delicious breakfast for huge crowds.
LEADING THE CELEBRATIONS
A true part of the community, the Brussels Fire Department leads the procession through
town for the Santa Claus parade and Funfest pajama parade as well as blasting the horn
and carrying baseball or hockey teams when they earn championship status. Firemen are
there for all type of occurrences in the village.
Fighting fires is not the only
aspect of the Brussels Fire Depart-
ment worthy of note.
As it is with any organization or
club there is a sense of camaraderie
and community.
It wasn't a fire that brought the
volunteers to present Chief Murray
McArter's home in the early 80s,
but it was as greatly appreciated.
Following a leg injury as a result
of responding to a fire call,
McArter was confined to hospital.
Many odd jobs around the home
were obviously abandoned. When
the sewer connection was made,
McArter was unable to level and
re-seed his lawn. Fellow members
of the Brussels Fire Department
congregated at his home and set
about getting the job done. The
project was completed in less than
two hours.
The task was recorded for poster-
ity by the local paper.
"This is what it's about, pulling
together to help each other when
it's needed," McArter says.
The Fire Department has attract-
ed attention over the years with its
fundraisers and events. In the mid-
50s it was donkey baseball and the
batter fight with the barrel over the
darn a few years later. Chief Hart-
ley Fischer won the television prize
at the fireman's ball and immediate-
ly put the ticket back in for another
draw.
