ment has been fortunate to have had good lead- years to the service of fire safety in the village.
Doc Stephenson
A veteran of the department for
38 years, the late Gordon Stephen-
son retired in November of 1983. A
feature story on "Doc" ran in The
Huron Expositor at the time of his
retirement. The story said that
locals claimed Doc had joined on

extra year, he said, after being per-
suaded by the Fire Chief Howard
Bernard.
At the time of his retirement Doc
said that if the department needed
his hand he would be there to help.
He stayed on as an auxiliary fire-
fighter until his untimely death in
the fall of 1994.
"I'm going to miss the compan-
ionship of being a fireman," Doc
said in 1983.
Howard Bernard
After 33 years with the Brussels
fire department, 11 as its chief,
Howard Bernard resigned in April
of 1993.
"I hate to leave, because it's been
part of my life for quite a while. It's
