On Friday, May 26, the First
Belgrave Brownies had a sleepover
at the Belgrave Women's Institute
Hall. The theme for the sleepover
was "native lore."
At 7 p.m. the campers arrived
and made a name tag where they
made up their Indian name for the
weekend. They were divided into
groups by their "sixes" which were
named by a native symbol. The
groups were moons, suns,
thunderbirds and fire.
After their nametags were
finished they got their sleeping
bags ready for bed, and then
proceeded over to Lianne
Swanson's where they had a
campfire of spider dogs and
marshmallows.
Jenna Howatt made a meal of
potatoes, carrots and hamburger
because she is working on her
camp badge. She also learned how
to build a campfire. Alice Yuill
asked questions about native people
to find out how much the girls
knew.
They then had a sing=song and
returned to the hall for bedtime.
On Saturday morning they had
several "early risers". The
Brownies made a dream catcher out
of branches, string, beads and
feathers. The Sparks made a native
headband and a leather canoe.
After everyone had arisen (some
were awakened), they cleaned their
sleeping gear and had breakfast of
pancakes and sausages. Each girl
had to wash and dry their own
dishes which made cleanup a
cinch!
After breakfast, Lauren Walker
and Karrin Marks showed the girls
how to make a bedroll. They then
proceeded outside where they
played Indian games led by Karrin
and Lauren.
After, Sandra Dorsch read a story
and went over native lore. As they
each were tested for their native
lore badge, the rest of the girls
made their canoes out of leather
and gimp. The Sparks made a drum
out of stones and aluminum pie
plates and gimp.
Everyone marched to Alice
Yuill's home where they saw baby
chicks and a hedgehog. Free time
was spent on Claren and Camerra's
playground
They then marched back, singing
songs to Lianne Swanson's where
they had lunch of pizza and yummy
desserts.
Special thanks to Marlene
Procter, Sandra Wall and Liz
Stryker for being excellent parent
helpers.

native lore badge as well as

badge as well.
