Soaring like an eagle or falling like a stone
True skydiving as offered by the Grand Bend Sport Parachuting Center,
teaches clients to fall several metres before deploying their chutes. The first
several jumps performed, after instruction in the classroom, are completed
with the assistance of two diving instructors who lead the client through the
jump. Though not an inexpensive hobby, it is one which provides a thrill not
experienced by most. (Photo by Mark Hrycay) •
Leap into skydiving at Grand Bend Sport Parachuting
By Janice Becker
Have you ever thought of leaping from a
plane, several hundred feet above the earth,
then allowing yourself to plummet towards
the ground below?
If your heart is racing and the adrenaline is
pumping, skydiving is probably an activity
which would be very much to your liking.
Grand Bend Sport Parachuting Center was
one of the many facilities to convert to
skydiving a few years ago, a change from
"just" parachute jumping, says owner and
instructor Bob Wright.
Up until about six years ago, free fall was
not allowed until several hours of jumping
had been logged.
Now, after six hours of ground training,
the jumper goes out with two instructors
holding on and free falls for some distance
before the chute is opened. From there,
instructions for steering and landing are fed
to the novice via radio contact.
The switch to the rectangular chutes from
the older round style has made steering and
landing much easier, says Wright. "The
landings are better and the jumpers don't
injure themselves."
For posterity, Sport Parachuting- takes
pictures and video during the first jump.
Group classes, of no more than 15, are
usually scheduled for weekends, running
from Friday evening to the jumps on
Sunday, but can be scheduled for weekdays
(groups of three or four) as can individual
instruction, refreshers or jumps.
The cost for the training and first jump
will run approximately $300 and up to $800
for the first seven jumps.
For those experienced in the sport, a jump
