Maitland Manor stilt-growing after 10 years of business
Planting for the future
Don Henry, owner of Maitland Manor Nursery takes pride
in the fact that their trees and shrubs are all grown oh his
property just east of Bluevale on Hwy. 21.
By Janice Becker
A business which began just 10
years ago through an interest in
trees and shrubs suitable to north-
ern Huron County and the western
regions of Ontario, Maitland Manor
Nursery has grown into a thriving
wholesale, retail and landscape
design enterprise.
Owners/proprietors Don and
Mary Henry and their family began
planting trees on their land just east
of Bluevale on Hwy. 86, 10 years
ago and entered the retail business
in 1990 when they were able to
provide their customers with a
homegrown product.
"Over those first years, we were
able to gain experience with the
type of plants which were good for
this area," says Mr. Henry.
"We started by supplying six or
eight wholesalers with trees and
shrubs and have expanded to
approximately 20 this year."
The hard work which has been
put into the business by the excel-
lent staff (often university students
who return year after year) has
helped the nursery to become well
known farther afield, he says.
The retail nursery has two acres
of sale area, there are five acres of
trees to view and another 15 to 20
acres planted in trees and shrubs. A
showcase of hard shrub roses is
planned for the front of the proper-
ty which will feature 40 to 50 dif-
ferent varieties.
"We have a large inventory
because I wanted the customers to
have a lot of choice," says Henry.
"Each year, we have tried to
introduce a new idea or theme to
the customers. The last couple of
years, water gardens have been
very popular and we have tried to
offer the largest selection of plants,
in the area."
Maitland Manor had 25 different
breeds of hardy water lilies last
year and 30 varieties of water
plants.
This year, Henry has decided to
concentrate on the retail end of the
business and has added a craft store
