Grand opening for the new Brus-
sels fire hall will be June 10.
Brussels council was informed at
its May 1 meeting that the firemen
plan a breakfast in the morning
from 7-10 followed by the official
opening from 2-4 p.m. The village
will investigate providing refresh-
ments for the afternoon ceremony.

There are now five municipalities
sharing the services of building
inspector Paul Josling which means
all costs for educational activities
are split five ways. Councillors
agreed to pick up one-fifth the cost
($20 per month) of the group bene-
fit package for Mr. Josling.
They will hold a trial for two
months of having Mr. Josling keep
a regular Wednesday morning
office hour for those wanting to
talk to him about building matters.

While council is generally
delighted to see new construction
in the village, one building project
that is on-going has them con-
cerned.

Council seeks
advice
on sewer work
Brussels councillors will seek
advice on the proper way to recover
the cost of sewer installation on
George St.
One owner of several lojs on the
street has objected to the $2,500
per lot levy for the installation of
the sewer on the street. He said he
expects his property to be sold as
one parcel and perhaps only with
one building erected on the whole
site. Therefore, he said, the $2,500
should only be charged if and when
a building permit is issued. Since
the costs are calculated on a per-lot
basis, it means that village taxpay-
ers could not recover the full cost
of the installation if only one
$2,500 fee were paid. The
landowner says he didn't ask that
the sewer be built in the first place.
Other sewer extensions have
been financed in various ways. In
some cases people paid up front; in
some they signed a development
agreement registered against title
on the property, promising to pay

A "shack" on village property
near the sewer plant continues to
expand, Clerk-Treasurer Donna
White reported to council. Council-
lor Greg Wilson said he would talk
with the young builders involved.
He had already spoken to them
once and they had arranged with
McDonald's Lumber to do work to
pay for the lumber they had "bor-
rowed" to build the shack.

The next homecoming meeting
will be May 17.
Councillors also discussed the
possibility of a history book being
written for the village in time for
the 1997 homecoming. Two mem-
bers of The Ark have been talking
to residents about their personal
histories.
