Blyth Midget Bulldogs capture Lake Placid gold
S ports
By Rusty Blades
The Blyth Midget Bulldogs
completed a Cinderella ending to a
very successful season on Easter
weekend as they won the 1995
Lake Placid Cup Midget
Tournament in Lake Placid, New
York.
They went undefeated as they
beat the Staten Island Teal Sharks
9-1, the Staten Island White Sharks
5-0, the Vancouver St. George's
Dragons 4-0 and the North York
Stars 4-1 in round robin action.
This put them into the champion-
ship game on Sunday afternoon
against the Staten Island White
Sharks, who finished in second
place. The Bulldogs repeated their
earlier score by once again
blanking the White Sharks 5-0 to
claim the Lake Placid Cup and gold
medals.
This was a weekend to remember
for all concerned as they completed
their season in grand style.
The Bulldogs opened the
tournament on Friday afternoon
against the Teal Sharks from New
York City. Blyth put the game
away early by scoring four goals in
the first four minutes of the game.
They added three more first period
tallies and two in the third as they
bombed the Teal Sharks 9-1.
Ryan Chanuiey earned the CCM
Game MVP Award as he recorded
four goals and added an assist.
Linemate Jason Rutledge chipped
in with four assists.
Other Bulldog marksmen were
Peter Craig, John Armstrong,
Jonathan Collins, Christopher
Howson and Greg Toll. Game
assists were awarded to Brad
Anderson, with two, Peter Craig,
Benjie Hakkers, Tim Cowan, Mark
Wilson and Chad Haggitt. Chris
Bromley went the distance between
the pipes stopping everything but
one second period shot.
Blyth improved its record to two
wins on Friday evening as they
shutout the White Sharks in another
dominating performance. Goal-
tender Michael deJong earned the
CCM Game MVP Award by
stopping all the rubber fired his
way in this whitewash.
Once again the Bulldogs took
control early with three unanswered
first period tallies by Howson,
Rutledge and Wilson. After a
scoreless second frame the
Bulldogs salted away the win in the
third with two more goals.
Howson cashed in his second of
the game while Collins completed
the scoring late in the third with a
bullet to the top shelf. Game assists
were earned by Chamney,
Anderson, Hakkers, Haggitt and
Toll.
The Bulldogs continued their
round robin on Saturday afternoon
as Chris Bromley recorded the 4-0
shutout of the Dragons. Blyth put
on a hockey clinic for those in
attendance with only the stellar
Dragon's goaltending keeping the
score respectable.
Jason Rutledge earned the CCM
Game MVP Award with a pair of
third period markers after Collins
had opened the scoring four
minutes into the contest. Chamney
completed the assault with the final
goal with only five seconds
remaining in the game after earlier
setting up the Bulldog's first three
the White Sharks whom they had
previously beaten. The net result
was the same, as Bromley and de
Jong shared the 5-0 Championship
shutout to lead the Bulldogs to the
Lake Placid Cup.
Chris Stewart opened the scoring
in the final minute of the first while
Blyth was enjoying a powerplay as
Chamney and Rutledge earned the
helpers. Peter Craig earned the
CCM Game MVP Award in part
due to his beautiful unassisted goal
midway through the second which
gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
Jason Rutledge increased the lead
two minutes later while Blyth was
enjoying yet another powerplay.
Anderson and Toll did the work in
the corner to set up Rutledge's high
shot from in close.
Rutledge and Peter Craig then set
up Chamney's goal early in the
third which put the Bulldogs in
front 4-0.
Another powerplay resulted in
Blyth's final goal of the tournament
with two minutes remaining in the
game. Rutledge was once again the
catalyst as his was redirected into
the goal by Chad Haggitt.
The final seconds ticked off as a
tired group of Bulldogs savoured
this Lake Placid Cup Tournament
championship to end a challenging
and memorable season. The play of
Mike Salverda, who was coming
off of an injury, Ben Craig and
Brian Marks, who played rock solid
defence, contributed greatly to
Blyth's stingy defence throughout
the weekend.
This was definitely a trip to
remember as they outscored their
opponents 27-two in the five
tournament games. The Bulldog's
fiesty winger Jason Rutledge was
named the CCM Tournament MVP
and won himself a new pair of
CCM Tacks. The team was
presented with individual gold
medals and the 1995 Lake Placid
Cup.
The Bulldogs overcame the odds
to not only participate in this
prestigious tournament but to come
home with all the hardware (which
happened about 5 a.m. Monday).
Thanks must go to team
management, and in particular
Trainer Allan Craig, for organizing
this rewarding excursion on behalf
of the Bulldogs. Planning was
made easier by the tremendous
support of the community for the
Bulldog's various fundraisers.
Everyone who journeyed to Lake
Placid will have fond memories of
this trip. (As well as some very
interesting photos).
Congratulations to the original
Blyth Bulldogs and may the
Bulldog tradition remain strong in
the Blyth Minor Hockey system.
Good luck to the graduating
Bulldogs and best wishes to the
future Blyth Bulldogs.
