Stratford marks
Bard's birthday
E ntertainment
The Festival City will mark
Shakespeare's 431st birthday with a
weekend full of activities from
Thursday, April 20 to Sunday,
April 23. The city will take on an
Elizabethan air for the weekend
with special theatrical perform-
ances, demonstrations, music and
feasting.
The Bard's birthday celebrations
kick off on Thursday evening at
7 p.m. at the Kiwanis Community
Centre with the Stratford Lakeside
Seniors' Association Shakespeare's
Birthday Bingo.
They will continue Friday
afternoon with the unveiling of
over 50 - four by eight foot murals
of Shakespeare himself, reproduced
from illustrations in Lois Burdett's
A Child's Portrait of Shakespeare,
at the corner of Romeo and Ontario
Streets. Later Friday afternoon, the
annual Big Sisters Shakespeare
Cake Decorating Contest and auc-
tion will take place at the Festival
Marketplace Mall followed by an
evening of live entertainment at
participating local clubs, pubs and
eateries.
CBC Radio's popular Fresh Air
program will broadcast live from
the City Hall on Saturday morning
from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. This
broadcast will feature interviews
with various Festival actors and
local personalities.
The official opening ceremonies,
Spring is here at last and the
Wingham and Area Seniors Day
Centre celebrated the season in
style.
On April 1 at the Blyth
Community Centre 250 people
gathered to have a good time
dancing to Neon Blue Band, and to
win up to $1000.
This year the fundraising
committee really outdid
themselves. Door prizes were
canvassed in the local area and over
350 tickets were sold. This year's
profits totalled $4,439.43. The
work was really appreciated.
The following individuals weren't

Margaret McVittie, Reverend Tom
Smith, Leonard and Lynette
Buckle, Anne Goodall, Connie
Willoughby, Bridge Motors and
Mildred Coupland.
The Wingham & Area Seniors
Day Centre is just the ticket for the
older adults who live in South
Bruce and North Huron counties.
For those who need companionship
the centre offers a day of
educational, cultural, physical and
presided over by MP John
Richardson, MPP Karen Haslem,
Mayor Dave Hunt, William
Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway
will take place at 9 a.m. at City
Hall. Following the opening
ceremonies there is a jam packed
schedule of events planned for
Saturday morning and afternoon
including Breakfast with the Bard,
Brunch with the Bard, exhibitions
by the Society for Creative Ana-
chronism, the Elizabethan Society
and the Blacksmith Guild of
Ontario and performances by Lois
Burdett's grade two class from
Hamlet School, Piaymakers,
Stratford Folk Guild and Three
Swords Cross.
On Saturday evening, the Church
Restaurant will be the site for a
gala dinner followed by a
continuous cabaret and music.
Proceeds from the dinner will go to
Habitat for Humanity.
The weekend wraps up on
Sunday with a special 11 a.m.
church service at St. James
Anglican Church followed by a
Community Concert and English
Cream Tea at Knox Church.
McDonald's of Stratford and the
media sponsor, CJCS Radio, will
conduct a special promotion.

WDCLA gets funds
Women with developmental
disabilities in the Wingham area
will be able to take assertiveness
training, sex education and self-
defense courses thanks to a $4,090
grant from the Ministry of
Citizenship.
Wingham and District
Community Living Association is
one of 13 organizations across
Ontario sharing a total of $224,858
in Community Action Fund grants.
The Community Action Fund is a
program the Ministry of Citizens
administered by the Client Services
Branch, Program Management
Division.

The board agrees to pay the fees
for resident external students of
Huron County only in cases where
the board is obliged by law or by
agreement with another board to
pay the fees.
The tenders for junior kinder-
garten alterations to East
Wawanosh Public School were
reviewed by the board.
The submission by Gordner Con-
struction, at a cost of $164,300,
was approved.
Travel expenditures recorded by
board trustees have dropped signifi-
cantly over the last two years.
Mileage is down to 503,716 kilo-
meters for 1994, a decrease of
almost 15,200 km. from the previ-
ous year and 116,500 km. less than
1992.
Principal Al Harrison of Blyth
Public School wrote to the board to
inform them of donations received
from community organizations.
The Blyth Legion Ladies Auxil-
iary donated $1,000 towards the
Grade 7 and 8 ski trip to Talisman
and $1,200 to the swim program at
Vanastra.
The Blyth Optimists donated
$300 to help with costs incurred in
the Peacemaker program.

The Hullett Central School Sup-
port Group, students, parents and
teachers sent thanks to the Londes-
boro Business Association for the
$25 donation towards new play-
ground equipment.
