Morning Star meets Brussels village council will look at reducing the financing costs on the village sewage system, a move that could also pay dividends for homeowners who still owe for their initial installation charges. A delegation of council met recently with officials of the Ontario Clean Water Agency, which has taken over from the Min- istry of Environment (MOE) as the operator and financier of the sewage system. They agreed the village could pay off the $228,000 capital debt on the system at the end of 1995. The village would pay off as much as possible of the loan, then refinance the rest at a better rate of interest than the current 11.22 per cent, Clerk-Treasurer Donna White told council. "I feel The new sewer line up George St. in Brussels will be longer than first planned. Brussels council agreed Monday night to extend the sewer a further 50 metres up the street after a request from John Pennington to hook his business in to the line. "I see no problem going an extra 50 metres if someone is going to pay," Councillor Greg Wilson said. "It will mean we're closer to being able to service the industrial park." Police make arrests Continued from page 1 crime ring, but rather "a number of well-organized groups who happen to know each other." Other arrests were Michael Desantis and Janice Desantis, both 34 of Niagara Fall on charges of conspiracy to traffic in metham- phetamine and conspiracy to pos- sess explosives, Robert Hacker, 31, of Winterbourne, Michael Saun- ders, 31 of Kitchener and Steve Wilson, 32 of Woodstock charged with a variety of drug charges, Joseph Kocsis, 28, of Beamsvillc, charged with conspiracy to possess explosives, Joseph Bellon, 29 of Guelph, charged with possession of stolen property and Jeffery Britten- den, 28, of Guelph charged with possession of stolen property, we can get a way better rate," she said. The new agency is more flexible than the MOE and is willing to renegotiate the rate of the loan if the village finds other financing sources more reasonable. "They (the agency) want to be our banker," Reeve Gordon Workman said. The council's move could pay dividends for those who haven't paid off their own frontage charges. At the time of sewer installation in the 1970s, residents were given the option of paying the entire frontage fee or financing it and paying for it on their monthly bill. Council will now offer homeowners a new opportunity to pay off the entire amount. This would allow home- (George St. is the access to the industrial park). The extension brings the total cost of the project to $41,000. Bro- ken down by the lots involved, it Tenders will be called next month for road paving and side- walk repairs in three areas of Brus- sels. Brussels councillors agreed Mon- day night to call tenders for the paving of Thomas St., between John and James, Alexander St. between Flora and Thomas, and Flora St. between Elizabeth and owners to take advantage of lower interest charges themselves and would mean that council would have to borrow less money to pay off the debt. "The agency feels council is being very generous in giving people a second chance to pay off their fees," Mrs. White told council. This will be a last chance for homeowners to pay off the debt, she said. In the meantime, there will be a lot of work for village staff in cal- culating how much each homeown- er still owes. A special computer program will help with the calcula- tions. Once the work is done a let- ter will be sent to all homeowners who are paying their frontage charges monthly, telling them how much the payout would be. means each property owner will pay about $2,400. The village will pick up $24,000 of the total. Letters will be sent to each property own- ers informing him of the cost. Alexander. The intersection of Flora and Alexander is also to be paved. Sidewalks are to be replaced on Alexander St. between Flora and Thomas, Thomas St. between John and James as well as at the corner of Tumberry and Thomas West (by Just For You Gifts and Flowers). The regular meeting of Morning Star Rebekah Lodge took place on March 28 with Noble Grand Jane Hall presiding. There was a good attendance of members. It was decided to purchase a shed to hold hospital equipment. This shed will be on the property of Bill and Lillian Moses for the present time. Jean Hodgert, D.D.
