By John Schedler The week's new releases are highlighted by a group of outstanding films that unfortunately found little success at the box office. First on the list is Imaginary Crimes **** (Warner), a totally engaging drama about a widowed con man (Harvey Keitel) raising two daughters while staying one step ahead of the bill collectors and the law. The story is told through the eyes of the eldest daughter (Fairuza Balk), a budding writer, who is taken under the wing of a caring school teacher. Rich in atmosphere this moving film features many excellent and emotionally charged performances, especially from Keitel and Balk. Highly• Recommended! (Rated PG, but in my opinion not suitable for ybunger children to view alone). Also worth a look is A Simple Twist of Fate ***1/2 (Touchstone), a comedy/drama starring Steve Martin as a reclusive man who adopts a baby after her mother dies. The plot also involves stolen gold and a ruthless politician who is, in truth, the little girl's real father. The fine supporting cast includes Gabriel Byrne, Catherine O'Hara and Alana Austin as the loveable child. Recommended! (Rated PG-13) The Burning Season*** (HBO) was actor Raul Julia's final film before his untimely death from a heart attack last fall. The story chronicles the life of Chico Mendes, the peasant leader who laid down his life to save the Brazilian rainforest. Excellent! (Unrated - some violence) Aside from having visions of the future, Nostradamus *** (Orion) also battled for truth in an age ofignorance and superstition. This is quite a good film boasting a fine international cast that includes Tcheky Karyo, F. Murray Abraham and Rutger Hauer. (Rated R) Other new and unpreviewed releases available this week include Love Affair (Warner), yet another re-working of An Affair To Remember, this time with Warren Beatty and Annette Bening. (Rated PG) Banned in Saskatchewan for a few days last year, Exit to Eden (Warner) is a kinky comedy starring Dan Aykroyd and Rosie O'Donnell as two cops who go undercover at a S & M resort. (Rated R) With none of the principals involved in the Nightmare on Elm Street movies finding much work after they killed off Freddy Kruger in part six of the series, you just knew he would return. So it comes as no surprise that Wes Craven's New Nightmare (Alliance) brings Freddy back in yet another blood bath geared to the intellectually challenged. (Rated R) It's Pat (Touchstone) is the latest spinoff from TV's Saturday Night Live, but unlike numerous others this film was barely released in theatres and goes direct to home video. (Rated PG-13) And finally, kids may like Camp Nowhere (Hollywood), a comedy about a group of adolescents who invent their own camp, fooling their parents and having a wild summer filled with Nintendo, junk food and no rules. (Rated PG) I Vida) IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY... I J.R.'S GAS BAR lir TAKE OUT LTD. BRUSSELS 887-6951 NEW RELEASES THIS WEEK 1.
