Ethel skater to compete
at Canadian Nationals
The Hunt family from Ethel con-
tinues to rack up awards in speed
skating, as the 1994-95 season
draws to a close.
Kathy Hunt and daughter Carla,
12, both qualified for further com-
petitions by placing well at the
provincial short track champi-
onships in Cambridge recently.
Mrs. Hunt won a silver medal in
the senior A division, though her
qualifying time will not allow her
to advance to Canadian finals.
Carla earned her second qualify-
ing time by skating the 500 meter
in 56.8 seconds. She had achieved
her first qualifying time at the
Ontario Winter Games.
She also earned a fourth place
finish overall, at the competition.
To qualify for the national cham-
pionships, a skater must have skat-
ed two qualifying times and placed
in the provincials.
A qualifying time must be within
nine per cent of the Canadian
Food biotechnology is receiving
lots of attention, but what are the
facts?
On May 4, agriculture and food
industry professionals and the
public will be able to attend a
workshop with some of the leaders
involved in the discussion of food
biotechnology. Through individual
presentations, panel discussions,
and breakout groups, workshop
participants will be able to learn
more about biotechnology in terms
of food nutrition and quality,
potential benefits and risks, ethical
considerations and approaches to
the discussion of this technology.
A distinguished speaker list
includes Dr. Bessie Borwein,
assistant dean - Research, Faculty
of Medicine, The University of
Western Ontario; Suzanne Hen-
dricks, P.D.t., president, National
record.
For the North American champi-
onships, the time must be within
eight per cent of the record.
The next competition took the
pair to the North American Cham-
pionships in Ohio this past week-
end where Mrs. Hunt skated in the
Masters class and Carla, in the
Midget girls division.
March 31 to April 3 will see
Carla in Regina, Saskatchewan for
the Canadian championships.
At the Ontario Winter Games in
Niagara Falls on March 9-12, Carla
took home three medals, a silver in
the relay team event and a bronze
in both the Junior Women's 500
and 777 meter races.
She also captured a fourth in the
666 meter event.
Another skater in the family, son
Brett, won the PeeWee Boys Long
Track Championship held in Sault
Ste. Marie last month.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
Bulldogs' coach Doug Chamney:
"You can't really tell anything
about a player until you've coached
him. Let me coach a young man for
one year and at the end of that time
I'll tell you more about him than
even his mother knows!"
