PAGE 21. Ethel skater to compete at Canadian Nationals The Hunt family from Ethel con- tinues to rack up awards in speed skating, as the 1994-95 season draws to a close. Kathy Hunt and daughter Carla, 12, both qualified for further com- petitions by placing well at the provincial short track champi- onships in Cambridge recently. Mrs. Hunt won a silver medal in the senior A division, though her qualifying time will not allow her to advance to Canadian finals. Carla earned her second qualify- ing time by skating the 500 meter in 56.8 seconds. She had achieved her first qualifying time at the Ontario Winter Games. She also earned a fourth place finish overall, at the competition. To qualify for the national cham- pionships, a skater must have skat- ed two qualifying times and placed in the provincials. A qualifying time must be within nine per cent of the Canadian Food biotechnology is receiving lots of attention, but what are the facts? On May 4, agriculture and food industry professionals and the public will be able to attend a workshop with some of the leaders involved in the discussion of food biotechnology. Through individual presentations, panel discussions, and breakout groups, workshop participants will be able to learn more about biotechnology in terms of food nutrition and quality, potential benefits and risks, ethical considerations and approaches to the discussion of this technology. A distinguished speaker list includes Dr. Bessie Borwein, assistant dean - Research, Faculty of Medicine, The University of Western Ontario; Suzanne Hen- dricks, P.D.t., president, National record. For the North American champi- onships, the time must be within eight per cent of the record. The next competition took the pair to the North American Cham- pionships in Ohio this past week- end where Mrs. Hunt skated in the Masters class and Carla, in the Midget girls division. March 31 to April 3 will see Carla in Regina, Saskatchewan for the Canadian championships. At the Ontario Winter Games in Niagara Falls on March 9-12, Carla took home three medals, a silver in the relay team event and a bronze in both the Junior Women's 500 and 777 meter races. She also captured a fourth in the 666 meter event. Another skater in the family, son Brett, won the PeeWee Boys Long Track Championship held in Sault Ste. Marie last month.
