Blyth Bulldogs' record,
27 wins, 13 losses, 3 ties
By Rusty Blades
Another Blyth Minor hockey
season is now complete with the ice
once again removed from the Blyth
Community Centre. The Blyth
Midget Bulldogs are slowly
recovering from their tough playoff
run and looking forward to the
Lake Placid Cup tournament in
Lake Placid, New York on April
13-16.
The Bulldogs had a fairy
successful season with a record of
27 wins, 13 losses and three ties to
date. In early November the Bull-
dogs were Consolation Champions
at the Zurich Midget Tournament
while in late November they were
finalists in the Wingham Regional
Silver Stick Midget Tournament.
This strong showing earned them
an invitation to the International
Silver Stick Finals Tournament in
Forest in late January.
As usual the team played their
best hockey during an extended
playoff run. The Bulldogs swept
Belmore in three straight games to
win the WOAA Midget E title.
This advanced them against Embro
in the OMHA quarter-finals. This
series was an emotional roller
coaster as Blyth won the first two
games, then lost two straight before
playing to a 2-2 overtime tie in
game five. An extra game was then
rescheduled as the Bulldogs
bombed Embro 8-1 at home for the
series victory.
Thedford provided the opposition
in semi-final action as they
eliminated Blyth from further
playoff action in a hard fought five
game series, with the home team
winning all the games. During this
series the Blyth arena rocked with
excitement as the locals came out
in full force to support the Midget
Bulldogs. Credit the players for
providing the thrills and conducting
themselves with class throughout
the playoffs.
The Lake Placid Cup Tourna-
ment will end this challenging
season for the team in mid-April.
The Bulldogs have been busy
raising money for the past two
months to help offset the players'
tournament costs. Several
donations have been received and
the Bulldogs' own fundraisers have
met with great success.
The NHL winning goal draw,
50/50 cash draws and the Bulldog's
ribbon campaign met with
favourable results from the many
Bulldog fans.
The team's biggest fundraiser
was the 'Relive The Dream'
Reunion Hockey game and
Memorabilia Auction and Sale held
on March 17. The game featured
Blyth's two OMHA Championship
teams - the 71-72 Pee Wees against
the 92-93 Bantams. Event
organizers were overwhelmed by
the response from the auction and
sale. Thanks to the support of the
community, the Bulldogs will be
participating in the Lake Placid
Cup tournament at a minimum cost
to the players. This is a strong
example that hard work and
insightful leadership can overcome
any obstacle.
Congratulations to the Bulldogs
for an entertaining season and good
luck to Blyth's graduating Midgets
- Ryan Chamney, Jonathan Collins,
Tim Cowan, Peter Craig, Michael
de Jong, Benjie Hakkers and
Christopher Howson. May they
take the positive aspects of their
minor hockey experience and use
them in future endeavors.
Don't forget the Minor Hockey
pot luck banquet and dance on
April 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Blyth
Community Centre with music
