From the Minister's Study Honesty goes a long way, says a lot By Steve Webb Knox Cranbrook A little honesty sometimes surprises us, but it sure goes a long way and says a lot. While talking with a woman last week the conversation swung around to the column you are now reading, "From the Minister's Study." She informed me that she read them all, some she agreed with some she didn't. Jokingly, I suggested that she probably agreed with the columns that I wrote. "Sometimes," she said. She got the last laugh. "You snakes, you brood of vipers... Go tell that Fox." Jesus was speaking very clearly and very honestly on two separate Leroy Winger leads worship Doreen and Huge Neufeld were special guests at Brussels Menno- nite Fellowship on Sunday, March 19. They are a team from MCEC (Mennonite Conference of Eastern Canada) which encourage churches to support and promote mission work at the local level, throughout North America, and overseas. Doreen gave the message based on I Corinthians 3, which was read by Eric Wideman. We must work together for God, and no one can take the credit, it goes to God. Leroy Winger was the worship leader. Andra Dettweiler played the piano for the offertory. Following the Sunday School sessions a meatless fellowship meal was held in the gymnasium, using the idea "to live simply so that others may simply live." The Grade 6-8s had a busy week. They travelled to Rockway Mennonite Collegiate on Thursday, March 16, where children from Mennonite churches from a wide area congregated for a special program. On Friday evening they were guests at Milverton Mennonite Fellowship, for a session of praise and fun. On Friday evening the youth held an "Academy Award" evening. On Sunday, March 19 Auburn Missionary Church was delighted to hear Doran Rolston and Will Jardine played a saxophone duet At the crossing. Pastor Bob Lewis brought the message, "What makes people do the things they do?" Why did Christ let himself go through the pain of the cross? Why did He endure the crown of thorns and the jeering crowd? Christ was not friendless neither was it human weakness. The cord of sin held Christ to the cross and this cord chaffed Him the On April 1 the Blyth Church of God is putting on a Free April Fools Spaghetti Dinner at the Blyth Memorial Hall. They are holding this event to help raise money to cover the cost of some renovations they are doing to the church building. This includes a new adult Sunday School room to accommodate an increase in attendance. But how can a free dinner generate funds? Well it's true the dinner is free and it's all you can eat. As well there will be great entertainment which is also free. occasions to the Pharisees. The first time his speech was directed at them, the second time at Herod. Both times-his words left little doubt about what he was saying to them. You need to listen of course and you need to know a little bit about the people he was talking to but you get the general idea just from what was said. Jesus was telling the Pharisees in as plain a way as possible, that they were well off the track of righteousness, even though they thought they were the very example of righteousness. It wasn't enough to be whitewashed on the outside when they were full of venom on the inside. They sought to serve themselves instead of God and the people of God. They killed the most, Pastor Lewis said. In Isaiah 53: 5 it reads "He was pierced through for our transgressions and He was crushed for our iniquities." The cord of the Saviour's love held Him on the cross. In John 15: 9 it says 'Just as the Father has loved Me, I have loved you." In verse 13 it reads "Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends." There was the cord of resignation to the divine call. God had planned this from the beginning that Christ would come to crush Satan, Pastor Lewis said. The cord of loyalty to an eternal What's the catch? You must pay for the utensils you use to eat your supper with! In preparation for the April Fool's Day Celebration, a clown troupe from the church invaded the main street of Blyth on Friday afternoon prophets and all who came in God's name. They were unwilling to hear the voice of God, perhaps because it was a strange voice, perhaps because it would condemn. And that fox, Herod. Sly, cunning and crafty in ways of destruction and the perfect predator. Jesus knew more about Herod than did Herod. He knew his role in the events to come, he knew the outcome and yet instead of making an attempt to outwit the fox or avoid him, he told Herod exactly what he would be doing and where he was going. Again honesty was used to show the way and the will of God. Jesus had assessed Herod and the Pharisees who came to warn him of purpose was another reason Christ went to the cross. Christ could not be unloyal to the purpose because this one purpose was Calvary. Christ's purpose was to save us. The same cord that bound Christ to the cross is the same cord that binds us to Christ's purpose. Let us be loyal to Christ's purpose. Pastor and Mrs. Carne are holidaying in South Carolina. Clarke and Ann Teall are on vacation as well as Roger and Debbie Newcomb and family. May all the vacationers enjoy journeying mercies. to get the word out. The clown troop was made up of Jackie Cook, Sunday School superintendent as well as Micha Loder, Christy Blair, Liz Sauve, Melissa Black and Brittany and Katie Cook all from Blyth. his impending doom at the hands of Herod, he knew their motives and their reasons. He could have played their game, and to a certain extent I think he did, but in his verbal assault upon their character and nature was a certain accuracy about their motives and desires. I imagine sometimes that immediately after the Pharisees left with their mouths hanging wide open, Jesus turned with just slightest hint of a smile, knowing that he had given them just cause for thought and concern. Then I also think that Jesus still does the exact same thing whenever we read these passages or whenever someone we meet causes us to look at ourselves and see that we too tend to be like the pharisees from time to time. A smile not of malicious satisfaction, but rather a smile of hope and parental insight. A little honesty applied in the right way has a wonderfully correct way about it, as long as we who hear it will take it to heart and learn from it. If we become defensive and upset, we hurt only ourselves. If we accept it and learn from it, we are in effect preparing ourselves- for the passion and compassion of Christ. This is, after all, the season of Lent, a time to reflect upon ourselves in the preparation of the Easter events. If it takes a little honest nudging on the part of Jesus or others, then accept it and use it to your benefit. May you use this season of lent to prepare for sorrow and joys of the Easter event.
