But The Brussels Bulls opened the Western Junior 'C' finals on the weekend as big underdogs and if their bark is not soon replaced with some bite the series will be over in a hurry. The opener Friday night in Mt. Wallace Twp. eliminated the Blyth Novice team in game four of the first round of playoffs, which dropped Blyth into the B division against Bayfield. This series began at home on Saturday, Feb. 25 for Blyth, although Bayfield won the flip. Unfortunately, Kyle Courtney and Jamie Stephenson led Bayfield's attack with two goals each, and Taylor Le Blanc scored once. Blyth was able to put the puck past goalie Matt Chapman only three times, as Kirk Stewart, Cole Stewart and Micah Loder scored to end game one with a 5-3 loss for Blyth. Game two took place the next day on Sunday, Feb. 26 at Bayfield. The flu epidemic hit some Blyth players hard, and four members were out for the game. However, the remaining squad worked diligently and put forth an excellent effort to record a 6 2 victory. On Saturday, Feb. 25, the Brussels Curling Club hosted a mixed bonspiel. There were 72 curlers participating. On the 9:30 a.m. draw the winning teams were: first, 45.75 points, Orval Bauer, Elaine Wicke, George Wicke and Ruth Bauer; second, 37.25 points, Heather Blake, David Lcwington, Lisa Blake and Jeff Lcwington; third, 35.5 points, Jo-Ann McDonald, Carmen Bernard, Heidi McClure and Bill Shortreed; fourth, 35 points, Valerie Shortreed, Fred McClure, Mary Bernard, Rick McDonald and Ken McDonald,' fifth, 32.75 points, Bill Young, Jeanette Young, Bill Dowd and Jeanne Baillie; sixth, 31.5 points, Jim Johnston, Wendy MacDonald, Pete Excl and Sarah Exel; seventh, 24 points, Abe Versteeg, Bill Darell, Janet Ireland and Vicki Seward; eighth, 17.25 points, Jon Michael Bean achieved the hat trick, followed by two goals by Cole Stewart and a single by Kirk Stewart. Neil Salverda supplied three assists for his team, while Eric Jarrett had a stellar game in net for Blyth and allowed only one goal back from Courtney and Stephenson. Game three was in Bayfield on Wednesday, March 1. Bayfield's offense was on again as Stephenson and Courtney scored their only goals. Blyth -esponded with the Stewart boys performing, with Cole scoring twice and Kirk once, as they also assisted on each other's goals, as well as an assist from Taylor Hesselwood. This was another close game in this evenly- matched series, and the game winning goal came with only one minute and 35 seconds remaining. Blyth had an opportunity to take Hamilton, Steve Westman, Cheryl Scott and Judy Hamilton; ninth, Tami MacDonald, Debbie Versteeg, Bill Ireland and Amanda Ireland; tenth, George Zwep, Jane Zwep, Dan Thompson and Cathy Thompson. Those teams on the 11 a.m. draw were: first, 44 points; Mervyn Bauer, Marg Taylor, Kim Lorimer and Donna Bauer; second, 36 points with a plus of 12, Mike Alexander, Velma Locking, Steve Stciss and Madelene Steiss; third, 36 points with a plus of 7, Brad Speiran, Jim Patterson, Pauline Patterson, Bill Quipp and Donna Quipp; fourth, 33.75 points, Brian Alexander, Nancy Phillips, John Morton and Mamie Simpson; fifth, 24 points, Al Dobson, Barb Dobson, Fred Smith and Sandy Smith; sixth, 23 points, Walter Bosch. Penalties hurt the home team as they played eight minutes short- handed compared to Bayfield's two minute deficit. Again, Cole Stewart led Blyth's offensive with two goals and Michael Bean slid in one. Bayfield's Mike Wise, Stephenson and Courtney scored. The fmal game took place March 4 in Bayfield Blyth pulled ahead in the first two periods with goals , from Micah Loder, Michael Bean and two from Cole Stewart. However, Bayfield fought back and made the game tense by Courtney ' scoring in the second and Le Blanc and Stephenson adding two more in the third. The final buzzer rang with a Blyth victory, 4-3. This puts Blyt:i into another series against either Ripley or Clifford. points, Bill Patterson, Sandy, Rathwell-Bennewies, Wayne Bennewies and Fran Smith; eighth, Bill Weir, Norma Weir, Paul Weir and Debbie McIntyre. Viith 2:41 to play Patriots' rookie Curtis Pinder broke in on the left side and hammered a slapshot by goalie Ryan Fisk. Fisk probably would have made that save but he had hurt his ankle earlier in the period and put on a heroic display to remain in the game. Doctors later diagnosed a stretched ligament in the ankle forcing Fisk from the lineup Sunday and maybe for the rest of the series. "That really hurt," said a dejected Bulls Coach Scott Pettigrew. "We battled hard but that penalty that led to the tieing goal was a huge mistake that you can not afford to make against a team like Mt. Forest. The Bulls have likely lost second year defenceman Zack Smith for the rest of the season. He injured his knee when he slid into the goal post during a rush in the third period. Sunday afternoon in Brussels the best crowd of the year was on hand for game two and the players should have been paying them to watch. A lack of discipline led to a steady stream of penalties which Mt. Forest took full advantage of, Coach Pettigrew said, scoring five times with the man advantage. "Mt. Forest cruised to 7-2 win and the Bulls were lucky it didn't reach double figures," he said. Greg McNevan and Pete Mulder scored the goals fbr Brussels. Coach Pettigrew admits he is worried, "We had too many players not ready to compete today and when the going got tough we folded up like a cheap lawn chair." Game three in the best of seven affair is Friday night in Mt. Forest and then the two clubs return to Brussels Saturday night at 9. Game five, if necessary, is Sunday afternoon in Mt. Forest at 1:30.
