Well done
Despite some outstanding plays like this from the Blyth Bulldogs goalie during Thursday
night's game in Embro, the home team couldn't pull out the victory losing this game by a
narrow margin. They did, however, take the series and now advance to another round
against Thedford.

'Blyth Midgets eliminate Embro in
quarter finals.'
Last week's premature Citizen
headline can now be repeated again
this week as the Bulldogs FINALLY
eliminated Embro. Blyth lost a 2-1
heartbreaker in game four and then
played a 2-2 overtime tie in game
five.
This gave each team five points
in the series so an extra game was
needed. The Bulldogs hosted the
extra game on Sunday evening and
left little doubt to the series win
with a convincing 8-1 drubbing of a
tough Embro squad.
The Bulldogs hosted game four
in their OMHA Quarter Final series
with Embro on March 2. Blyth
dominated and outshot their
competition by a 3:1 ratio but had
trouble beating a hot Jeff Morris in
the Embro net. Embro stunned the
locals with a late third period
shorthanded goal to even the series
at two wins each as they shaded the
dogs 2-1.
Embro opened the scoring with
six minutes left in the first period
but Blyth tied the game one minute
and 20 seconds later. Ryan
Chamney and Peter Craig earned
the assists as Jason Rutledge found
the twine as he cashed in the
rebound.
Goals were hard to come by the
rest of the way as the goaltending
was brilliant at both ends of the ice.
The play went end-to-end at a fever
pitch, which seemed to ignite the
large contingent of fans in
attendance.
Embro finally slipped the winner
by the Bulldog's cage kc:.per
Michael de Jong with one minute
and 40 seconds left in the game.
Blyth responded with some spirited
play right up until the final buzzer
but couldn't bury the equalizer as
Embro emerged with a 2-1 win.
Embro then played host to game
five on March 4 with the winner
Brussels Tykes,
runners-up
for A title
The Brussels Tykes game one
against Ripley was awesome. The
whole team played well. Brent
Wheeler, Justin Thompson and
Philip Wedow did the scoring and
Chris Corbett played great in net
which resulted in a 3-1 win.
Game two against Monkton was
just as impressive if not more so,
with Brussels winning 10 - 5. Brent
again led the scoring with two hat
tricks plus one and Adam McClure
and Philip Wedow got the rest.
After Chris Corbett's great effort in
game one he got the start in game
two and was spectacular again.
Game three, the final against
Continued on page 14
advancing to the OMHA semi-
finals. After four periods of hockey
were played, including an overtime
frame, nothing was settled as the
teams skated to a 2-2 tie.
Peter Craig, with an assist to Tim
Cowan, opened the scoring seven
minutes into the game. After a rink-
length dash, Craig's centering pass
was deflected into the net by an
Embro defender.
Embro took a 2-1 lead with two
goals in the first five minutes of the
second stanza. The Bulldogs tied
the game 2-2 with just under three
minutes left in the second. Blyth
was enjoying a power play as
Brand Anderson set up Peter Craig
who fired the puck up into the top
shelf.
Once again goaltending was the
name of the game as the teams
played a scoreless third period.
Next up was a 10 minute overtime
period. Neither team could light the
red light in the extra session
although there were plenty of
chances at both ends. The game
ended in a 2-2 tie which gave each
team five points in this six point
series.
An extra game would have to be
played which the Bulldogs hosted
on Sunday, March 5. Blyth's
offensive weapons finally found
twine as they humbled a tired
Embro team 8-1.
The Bulldogs came out flying
and Chamney backhanded in the
opening goal 10 seconds after the
opening faceoff with Peter Craig
and Rutledge doing the passing.
Midway through the first, Rutledge
notched the eventual game winner
as linemates Chamney and
Christopher Howson earned the
assists.
The Bulldogs outscored Embro
3-1 in the second period to put
destiny in tht-ir own hands with a 5-
1 lead. Chamney upped the count
to 3-0 three minutes into the second
with assists to Howson and Chris
Stewart. Five minutes later Brian
Marks fed Greg Toll at the point,
who came through with a clutch
blast to the top corner.
Embro finally slipped one by
goaltender de Jong with three and a
half minutes left but the Bulldogs
restored their four goal lead 12
seconds later. Stewart and Jonathan
Collins had the assists as Howson
finally broke out of a prolonged
scoring slump.
Special teams provided the
heroics in the third as the Bulldogs
put the finishing touches on their
series win with two shorthanded
goal.; and one powerplay goal.
With eight minutes to play in the
game Brad Anderson sent Rutledge
and Chamney in on a two on one
break with a shorthanded snapshot
completing Chamney's hat trick.
Two minutes later, with Blyth
enjoying a power play, Chad
Haggitt sent Peter Craig on a mad
dash that ended with Craig's bullet-
like slapshot from just inside the
Embro blueline catching nothing
but twine. Craig then added insult
to injury with two and a half
minutes left in the game. Stewart
sent him in on a breakaway and, as
he was being hauled down from
behind, he deked the beleaguered
Embro puckstopper to the ice
before slipping the puck into the
net. This exceptional shorthanded
effort finished the scoring. The
game ended relatively incident free
and two very tired hockey teams hit
the showers after this gut-
wrenching hard fought six game
series.
Two evenly matched teams
played the first five series games
before Blyth's experience and
patience shone in game six. The
entire team came through with
strong performances with each
player playing their role to
perfection.
This 8-1 win gave the Bulldogs
the series seven points to five
points. Blyth now advances to the
OMHA Semi-Finals against Thed-
ford. The first game will be played
in Thedford at 9:15 p.m. on Friday,
March 10. Game two is Sunday,
March 12 at 2 p.m. in Blyth.
In quarter final playoffs the Bel-
grave Atoms houseleague team are
leading the best of five series by
two against Brussels.
Game one was in Belgrave on
Feb. 27 and the home team skated
away with a narrow 7-5 victory.
Brussels jumped ahead in the
first period with goals by Mark
Hunter and Lee Dilworth, assisted
by Hunter. Dilworth notched anoth-
er in the second, but a three goal
effort by Belgrave tied it up. Scor-
ing for the home team were Garrett
Knight, Matthew Bromley and
Chad Cook. Assists went to Justin
Campbell, two, Travis Hopper and
Knight.
A four goal onslaught by Bel-
grave vanquished the visitors, who
only tagged two in the third. Camp-
bell earned a hat trick, while
Knight completed the effort, with a
goal and an assist.
Blyth Tykes lose
On Saturday, March 4 the Blyth
Tyke team faced a much stronger,
much improved Hensall squad.
The home team managed only
two goals, by Brett Bean and Luke
Anderson, while the visitors found
the twines four times.
Sandy Hay played a solid game
in net for Blyth and thwarted many
of the opposition's attacks.
Visitors goals were scored by
Dilworth and Matt Elliott.
Game two was played on Sunday
in Brussels and this time Belgrave
glided to an 8-1 victory over the
home team.
Scoring for Belgrave were Jim
Wray, Knight with two, Chad Cook
with three, and Campbell with
two.
Assists went to Ken McCracken,
Cook, Campbell, Travis Hopper
and Dan Mullin.
Travis Campbell did a great job
in net for the visiting team.
