OPP officer talks on safety
Barb McMillan welcomed ate
ladies to the regular UCW meeting
on March 1. Sarah Stephenson took
the chair for the worship. Mary
Jean Bell read the scripture on the
"Temptations of Jesus". Hymn. He's
Got the Whole World in His Hands.
Sarah read the poem "Footsteps"
and led in prayer.
Kathy McMillan introduced the
guest speaker Constable Lorra
Easterbrook, who spoke about
"Women Driving Alone." She used
a video to show how important it is
for women to always be aware of
their surroundings and be aware of
what can happen when women
travel alone. Always have your
keys in your hand ready to open the
car. In an underground parking lot
get into the car as fast as you can.
At a hotel be sure the bell-hop
checks all the rooms before you
enter. If a stranger raps at the door,
call the desk to send security and
never open the door. A good idea is
to carry a door alarm.
Be sure to carry a "Call Police
Sign" in the car, keep the car tuned
up and the gas tank at least half
full.
If you have car trouble on the
road, never raise the' hood, never
open your car window more than
1" to talk to strangers and always
stay in your locked car until help
comes.
Kathy thanked Lorra and
presented her with a gift. Lunch
was served by Barb McMillan.
At the business part of the
meeting it was decided that the
Easter luncheon would be held on
March 30.
The June Garden Party will be on
Sunday, June 4.

The budget calls for the levy to
Brussels taxpayers increasing to

of the increase will come from a

committee cut its levy to the
municipalities by $6,000 and raise
the extra money through fundrais-
ing activities. But Brussels council-
lors felt this was unrealistic. "There,
are 33 groups in this town trying to
raise money already," said Coun-
cilor Joe Seili. He didn't think there
would be any chance to raise the
extra money "unless these guys
from Morris are going to jump in
