Flu hits school hard
Snow much fun
It was a group of young and enthusiastic players at the Blyth fairgrounds on Saturday for the
second annual Co-ed Sno-Fun Festival. In addition to going 'end-to-end' in a rousing game of
street hockey, contestants also faced off in sno-pitch, volleyball, touch football and a plank
walk. Anyone left standing at the end of the day could enjoy the evening's dance, which
capped off the event.
The staff and students of
Goderich District Collegiate Insti-
tute were sent home early Feb. 23
and this time, it was not due to poor
weather conditions.
Dr. Maarten Bokhout, Medical
Officer of Health for Huron County
received a call Thursday morning,
from GDCI Principal Bruce Shaw,
concerning an outbreak of the flu in
the school population.
More than 200 students and at
least 1/3 of the staff were affected
by the illness, says Dr. Bokhout.
"Mr. Shaw expressed concern
about the ability of the staff to
teach classes with so many teachers
absent and I was concerned about
exposing more students to the ill-
ness," he says.
John Richardson, MP for Perth-
Wellington-Waterloo is pleased to
announce that he will be presenting
Mr. Jim Schurter of Listowel with
The Prime Minister's Award for
Teaching Excellence in Science,
Technology and Mathematics.
This prestigious award
recognizes exceptional
contributions to the teaching of
science, math and technology. This
year, a total of 87 elementary and
secondary teachers in Canada have
been chosen to receive this
certificate of excellence along with
a cash award shared in part with
their school.
"Skills in the fields of math and
science will be key to the future
success of our young people. Mr.
Schurter should be commended for
his endless enthusiasm and
teaching excellence which has
influenced his student's interest and
performance in these critical
fields," said Mr. Richardson.
For 25 years, Mr. Schurter has
taught at Listowel District
Taken separately, these factors
would not have caused the school
to be closed, but together, Dr.
Bokhout says, he believes the move
was necessary.
Other area secondary schools
report less than 10 per cent absen-
tism.
The symptoms reported by those
infected include headaches, fever,
muscles aches and pains and, in
some cases, vomiting.
Dr. Bokhout advises anyone with
these symptoms to stay at home (to
limit the spread) and for those hop-
ing to avoid the flu, get plenty of
rest, eat properly and dress appro-
priately for the weather.

Secondary School (LDSS). During
this time, he has actively
encouraged his students to
participate in numerous
Mathematics contests. As head of
the Math Department, Mr. Schurter
has inspired and encouraged many
students to consider a career in the
field of mathematics.
In addition, Mr. Schurter co-
founded the Grand Valley
Mathematics Association - a
professional organization for Math
Teachers in his area. This support
group has participated in various
conferences and publications on a
provincial level.
"Mr. Schurter is a tireless worker
dedicated to the teaching of
mathematics," remarked Mr. Ron
Finch, Principal of LDSS.
The presentation will take place
at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 7,
1995 at LDSS. Mr. Richardson
will present the award to Mr.
Schurter at the beginning of an
awards assembly for student s and
teachers of the school.
