Bulls in finals, beat Hanover
Novices edge Teeswater
ports For the first time in franchise
history the Brussels Bulls have beat
the Hanover Barons in a Junior 'C'
playoff series. Sunday night at the
Brussels arena, Sheldon Mustard
scored on a breakaway to give the
Bulls a 6-5 overtime victory and
eliminate the Barons with a three to
one semifinal series victory.
The Bulls had lost four times in
six years to Hanover and it was a
sweet victory for overage veterans
Greg McNevan and Brian Zabel,
who had suffered through three
defeats at the hands of the Barons.
The Bulls will meat the Mt.
Forest Patriots in the Western
Junior 'C' final. The Patriots, the
defending champions, finished first
this season with a record of 21-4-5.
The Bulls were third with 16 wins,
eight losses and six ties.
It looked like the Bulls were
going to blow Hanover out in the
early going Sunday jumping out to
a 5-0 lead. Kevin Ball, Tim Beyer
and Nate Bender scored first period
goals and then Ryan Wright and
Josh Alexander added powerplay
After losing out to Kurtzville the
Blyth Atoms are back on the ice in
playoffs with Bayfield.
Wednesday night saw the local
team in Bayfield with their back-up
goalie Robbie Archambault,
utilizing the complete team Blyth
won 5-3. Tyler Wilson provided the
extra manpower on defence and
played an outstanding strong game.
Derek Cook and Matt Anderson led
the offense with assistance from
hardworking wingers Shawn Henry
and Jeremy Hanna.
Hustling power was really paying
markers in the second. But then the
wheels started to fall off for the
home team. Hanover scored a
shorthanded goal and then added
two more while the Bulls were
shorthanded.
Bulls defenceman Brad Gibb had
been ejected for hitting from
behind and the Bulls took two more
minor penalties while serving the
five minute major. Hanover drew to
within one when a pass from the
corner deflected in off a skate and
then Jason Howes forced overtime
fighting off Beyer in front of the
net to beat Fisk with a good wrist
shot.
Coach Scott Pettigrew, while
pleased with the victory, would
have liked an easier finish. "We
didn't take a lot of penalties but
they came at a bad time and we let
Hanover off the ropes."
Mr. Pettigrew added it was nice
to see the game end on a "good"
goal.
Friday night the Bulls took a two
games to one lead with a strong 6-0
victory in Hanover. The powerplay
off for the team. Devon Shannon,
Nick Courtney and Jeff Carter were
at the back to help Archambault out
with the rebounds and they stood
strong at the blue line when on the
offense. Martin Sturzenegger
provided an excellent screen in
front of the Bayfield goalie.
Michael Bernard used every trick
in the book to get any chance of a
goal. Justin Rinn worked skillfully
to get the puck to his centres.
On Thursday night, Bayfield
came into Blyth with the snow.
Unfortunately Blyth was still
was the difference as the Bulls
scored on four of nine chances.
Brad Gibb opened the scoring
after Ryan Wright won the draw
clean and then Nate Bender got on
track with a powerplay marker late
in the opening period. Kevin Ball
scored the only goal of the second
on the powerplay deflecting a point
shot from Josh Alexander.
The Bulls broke the game open
on two goals by Greg McNevan
and Sheldon Mustard in a span of
50 seconds in the third. Wright
completed the scoring, again while
the Bulls had a man advantage.
Ryan Fisk stopped 29 shots for the
shutout.
"A lot of veterans stepped up and
took charge after struggling in
game two," said the Bulls coach.
Mr. Pettigrew is looking forward to
the finals, "We have to be big
underdogs but anything can
happen."
The Bulls will open the Western
Junior 'C' final Friday night in Mt.
Forest at 8:30 and then return to
Brussels Sunday night at 2:00 p.m.
missing their regular goalie Ryan
Lee. Tyler Wilson after an
excellent game the night before
was out with the flu.
Robbie Archambault and a lot of
Blyth's horseshoes managed a
shutout with a 2-0 score. The Blyth
team continued their good passing
game and waiting for the right
break. Goals were awarded to Matt
Anderson and assists went to Nick
Courtney and unofficially to
Michael Bernard who was very
diligent in the corners.

In the fourth of a best-of-five
series, the Brussels Novices were
able to stave off elimination by
defeating Teeswater on Feb. 24.
A goal by Brandon Blake, assist-
ed by Joel Hemingway and Robbie
McClure took the home team into
the second period with the lead.
The visitors were able to tie the
score half way through the frame

Atoms House League team on Feb.
20, returning home with a loss.
Matt Bromley opened the scoring
for Belgrave in the second before
Justin Campbell added to the tally.
Though Belmore fought back

Blake racked up a second netter
at the 14:35 mark of the third, earn-
ing the win for Brussels as Teeswa-
ter was only able to bulge the twine
for one more in the dying minutes
of the contest.
The series now stands at two
wins for Teeswater, one win for
Brussels and one tied game.
The fifth game was hosted by
