Pennell
withdraws
from Stratford
season
Artistic Director Richard
Monette regrets to announce that
Nicholas Pennell has withdrawn
from the 1995 Stratford Festival
season because of ill health.
An accomplished actor, as
popular with Festival audiences as
he is admired by his peers, Mr.
Pennell completed his 23rd
consecutive Stratford season in
1994. He was to have appeared in
three productions in 1995: as
Duncan in Macbeth, as Sir Jasper
Fidget in The Country Wife and as
Emperor Joseph H in Amadeus.
New casting for those roles will
be announced as soon as the
information is available.
Undergrand
has 'Whale
Riding Weather'
Whale Riding Weather, Bryden
MacDonald's acclaimed play about
love, lust and second chances, is
the fmal Undergrand production in
The Grand's McManus Theatre this
season. Nominated for a 1994
Governor-General's Award, Whale
Riding Weather previews March 1
and 2, opens Friday, March 3 and
runs until Saturday, March 18.
Lyle, an "aging queen from the
Rock", lives in a shabby apartment
with his emotionally withdrawn ex-
lover, Auto, and more that a dozen
cats. In retreat from the world Lyle
reflects with biting humour on past
triumphs and disappointments, old
loves, friends and enemies, his ex-
wife and his son. The refuge he
and Auto have created begins to
alter with the arrival of Jude, a
compulsive young romantic
brought home by Auto after a night
out. The Vancouver Sun called
Whale Riding Weather "a roller-
coaster ride of pain and humour
and pathos and love."
Whale Riding Weather stars
George Dawson as Lyle, Michael
McManus as Auto and Alexander
Chapman as Jude. The play is
directed by The Grand's Artistic
Associate Charles Tomlinson, with
set, costume and lighting design by
John Thompson.

By Dan Kipfer
In this era of CNN and mass
media, Billy Bishop gives a face
and personality to history.
As I sat down and got
comfortable in the Blyth Memorial
Hall last Sunday afternoon, I had a
bad feeling about the play I was
about to see. The audience was
sparce and the set was plain. As the
lights were dimmed and the play
began all my fears quickly faded.
Bruce Dinsmore played Billy
Bishop a young man from Owen
Sound pushed into WWI. He did an
outstanding job showing all sides
of Bill's personality. He seemed to
capture the audience and take them
on a ride, that was at times funny
and often thought-provoking.
Robert Buns, the only other
member of the cast had a thankless
role as the piano player. The actor's

rapport with each other was
wonderful. They played to each
other and seemed to be enjoying
themselves.
On a broader scale the play
provided a wonderful look back at
the world during WWI.
As a young person deeply mired
in the X-generation, it is sometimes
difficult to see the world as
anything other than that of this time
period. We are constantly
bombarded with images of the past.
History class always made me feel
that all these events took place in
another world with nameless and
faceless people.
Billy Bishop does a great job of
bringing a face and personality to
WWI. I doubt I will regard WWI
the same again. It's too bad that this
Billy Bishop Goes to War was only
playing once. I think it would do a
lot of people good to see it.

Nicholson, Freda Scott.
The next shoot party will be
Friday, Feb. 24.
